COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Ohio Department of Health says a 9-year-old boy who recently traveled to Mexico on vacation with his family has a confirmed case of swine flu.
Health department spokesman Robert Jennings said Sunday the boy is recovering at his home in Elyria, in northern Ohio's Lorain County. The child's name was not released.

Yes. Very true. I do not believe the majority of people realize the important details about this particular strain. Of course, the worst of it is that it IS a new strain (looks like amorph of avian/swine and regular flu) and that it apparently does its worst damage on young and healthy people.
She says they have been told NOTHING by NO ONE. They are due to fly back into Boston tomorrow, and Im just wondering what sort of precautions U.S. Customs is going to take when they land.
Please keep us posted....
BELOW IS A COPY OF THE PRESS RELEASE SENT TO THE MEDIA SUNDAY:
For Immediate Release - Apr. 26, 2009
OHIOAN TESTS POSITIVE FOR SWINE FLU
COLUMBUS - The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) today confirmed a case of swine flu involving a 9-year-old boy from Lorain County. The patient is considered to have a mild case of the disease and is recovering at home.
Because this combination of strains of the influenza virus is new, ODH and local health departments remind Ohioans of the precautions they should take to avoid exposure. As with all newly emerging flu strains, no vaccine has yet been developed.
“I urge Ohioans to be alert to information about this new flu,” said ODH Director Alvin D. Jackson, M.D. “In addition, the tried-and-true saying about washing hands and covering one’s cough remains sound medical advice.”
Symptoms of this swine flu virus closely resemble seasonal flu, and include fever, weakness, coughing and lack of appetite.
ODH and local health departments are working with health care providers and hospitals around the state to determine if there are other cases. According to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all health care providers who see patients with flu-like symptoms and learn that the patient traveled to Mexico, affected counties in Southern California or Texas during the 7 days preceding their illness onset, should have nasal swab samples from the patient tested. Recommendations from ODH and CDC include:
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. · Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. · Try to avoid close contact with sick people. · If you get sick with influenza, see your doctor and CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Additional information is available on the ODH and CDC Web sites at http://www.odh.ohio.gov and http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. The Ohio Department of Health will be providing additional updates as information becomes available.

Let’s hope so.
So why doesn't the whole family have it?
I respectfully disagree with your opinion on this. I’ve been reading a LOT of articles on this, and have been discussing this with a lot of FReepers of various backgrounds, and while our government being the A**** they are may use this to advance their agenda, the virus itself is very real, as are the risks that this could indeed become a pandemic (one that in all honesty mankind is ‘overdue’ for when you look at the history of ‘medicine’ and/or illness — our world IS ‘overpopulated’ (not in the sense of those wacko liberals who want to abort babies), but in the sense that due to modern travel, large cities etc... it’s actually pretty amazing we haven’t seen something like this years ago...).
Terrific...I just rolled in about an hour ago to Westlake.
Actually, that’s not his part of OH.
Can't put my finger on what it is yet.
Got his edgy feeling and that's all I got to go on right now.

Bush OKs Bird Flu Quarantine in U.S.

WASHINGTON — President Bush signed an executive order Friday authorizing the government to impose a quarantine to deal with any outbreak of a particularly lethal variation of influenza now found in Southeast Asia.

And bygosh, bygolly, bygum ain’t this thing got avian in it.

The actual order doesn’t even specify avian...just influenza.
“California school closed as officials investigate suspected swine flu case; second case being investigated in Ohio”
This really shouldn’t shock anyone. The potential for a flu pandemic has been well understood for decades.
We know the flu virus mutates. And we know that if it mutates in way to where it forms a strain that is neither predicted, nor anyone has natural immunity to, it roars through the population.
And there’s not a hell of a lot you can do about it.
It’s already out and now it’s being confirmed from New Zealand to the Americas. In the global economy you can’t isolate this or contain it.
All you can do is react.
The huggy feely stories that suggest everyone in America is having “mild” cases while 7.5% of those confirmed with in Mexico have already died, make no sense. It’s the same virus.
7.5% is unrealistically high, which surely means that many Mexicans who have gotten it have neither died nor been officially diagnosed.
But the most famous flu killer, the Spanish Flu from early last century, did kill 2.5% of the people who caught it.
There is a very good chance we’re watching the start of a flu pandemic. None of us are immunized for it.
Who in their right mind would travel to a 3rd world country, in the middle of violent drug wars, and now this?
Either illegal aliens, a family of drug smugglers or just stupid people.
One thing I noticed is that the media is still calling this “Swine Flu”. Medically, that is NOT what we are dealing with in this illness... Tests through the CDC have shown that this is a NEW strain that contains partial genetic codes of North American Swine Flu, “Regular” Human Flu “A”, North American Avian Flu, AND European/Asian Swine flu.
Also, while Swine flu is known to be transferred from an infected pig to humans, this is the first time it has shown the ability to be transferred from Human to Human.
Again, while our (stupid) media is calling this “swine flu” that is NOT what we are dealing with.
Also, it took US doctors sending samples to the CDC for testing in discovering that this wasn’t your “regular” swine flu, for doctors in Mexico to even CONSIDER that this wasn’t a “late-season regularly occurring flu”.
The difference in mortality rates in Mexico vs. the “mildness” of symptoms in Americans, and folks from other more developed countries COULD be the result of Americans (and other “richer” countries) having a higher ‘baseline’ of general health, as well as better sanitation, availability of quality medical care, etc...
I would hate to see people jump to the conclusion that this is all a bunch of hogwash (no pun intended), because if we really ARE dealing with a possible pandemic that mindset is the WORST possible thing that could happen — as it could lead to people unwittingly exposing themselves and others unnecessarily.
Now, given the above, I’m not suggesting people PANIC (again one of the WORST things that could happen), just that we need to reserve judgment until we get more information.
What do we know for sure — this is a NEW strain of flu, and it isn’t “Swine Flu” that we’ve dealt with naturally occurring for years and years now according to the scientists who have been able to develop a complete genetic code for this virus already. It RESEMBLES 4 different strains of previously known viruses (flu viruses), but it is NEW, and has NEVER been seen before by scientists.
It’s also important to take media reports with a grain of salt in some ways — we can’t even trust them to get quotes right when it comes to political campaigns and such, to take them at their word when it comes to something WAY more complicated such as medical issues would be naive, IMHO.
Man, you guys have got to get control here. This absolute nonsense.
Sorry — I completely forgot about the second part of your question regarding a “muslim thing”.
MANY people on other threads who would appear to have more medical education that I are saying that this has all the hallmarks of an ENGINEERED virus (the combination of strains that seem very unlikely to have had ‘opportunity’ to recombine their DNA strands effectively without ‘help’).
Taking into account the MO of various Radical Islamic Terrorist Groups, we may be looking at something of a ‘dry run’. Something that isn’t incredibly virulent, but will give them a GREAT ‘blueprint’ of how the world would respond to an attack of this nature. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they were watching carefully how this virus spreads (how quickly, how effective, etc...), and then the ‘mad scientists’ among those terrorist groups (men like “Chemical Ali”) will then use this information to tweak their plans.
*I’m feeling like I need to include a disclaimer on these posts. I’ve always had a very strong interest in medicine (heck, I thought reading the Merck Manual as a pre-teen was “fun and fascinating”, and while I know ‘a lot about a little’, the highest formal education I’ve had in this subject was an AP Biology course I did well in. So, while I know enough to understand some of these things I’m am not an ‘expert’ in these issues, and would never hold myself up to be one — even though my INFORMAL education on these topics has continued into adulthood in an effort to satisfy my curiosity. I just think people should know where I’m coming from so they don’t take my words with more weight than they should... While I’m confident in saying I probably know a lot more than some of these reporters, I’m totally open to being “corrected” on my understanding of how these things work...
I know that disclaimer may be unnecessary, but I want to be completely honest here — misinformation in cases like this can LITERALLY lead to unnecessary deaths or cases of panic! LOL
