Doctors in America are advising worried patients to buy painters masks as a precaution against the global outbreak of swine flu that appears to have spread from Mexico to the United States, New Zealand and possibly Europe.
With the worldwide death toll standing at about 81 and with about 1,300 people infected, authorities across the globe are torn between the desire to slow down a potential flu pandemic and the need to avoid bringing major cities on every continent to an economic standstill.
As of today, the US was still allowing people to cross the border from Mexico where it is thought the swine flu emerged last week although customs officials at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa border crossings were given protective masks. It is thought that eight people in US border towns have gone down with swine flu, and tonight Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that a further eight cases have been confirmed among students in New York.

Right - so when someone breathes that virus whether or not they’re wearing a mask they’ll get it ...
Well that is true ... I always carry a small bottle of sanitizer with me ...
I’ll do it when they make one that has a hole in it to let me smoke.
~/<;o)
No, the mask will catch the aerosolized droplet, offering some measure of protection. So those walking around with masks on actually do decrease their risk of infection somewhat.
Does the virus get spread as an isolated organism, or is it carried by water droplets (such as from a sneeze)?
Almost a year ago this 30 second commercial started playing around Ohio. Very mysterious - almost as if it was setting us up. I’m not paranoid, but in light of the recent happenings, this is all the more mysterious. One of the phrases - “It will happen again!”. OhioPandemicFlu.Gov. I really encourage you to take 30 seconds to watch this.

Thank you for posting this! I referenced it another thread but wouldn’t have known the link and couldn’t remember enough to find it during a search.
Those first person reports are more telling than any news reports I've seen so far. There appear to be a LOT more fatalities from this virus than the Mexican government is reporting.
It's also beginning to look like the governments of both Mexico and the US are attempting to play this down, when in fact, it's out of control and not affected by any medications.
I just went to several drug stores to get masks. Two stores were already sold out, so I’m glad I found the ones I did.
Only one pair is rated for virus protection, the others are surgical masks and masks effective against bacteria.
The point about the mask for me is that it stops you from absent-mindedly touching your nose and mouth with you hands, which I believe is the chief way that colds and influenza are spread, not by simply inhaling the germs, although that’s certainly possible, too.
I’ve never worn a mask before, so this is an extraordinary step for me. But I have a wife now, and I want to take steps to protect her, more than I ever thought about protecting myself.
If nothing comes of this, and right now I don’t know that it will, I’m out 20 bucks. So what? I can handle 20 bucks. If the bug turns out to be serious, I’ve got something which may help to protect us. Either way, I’m fine with it.
Why are some people dying in Mexico, instead? Simple, they are drinking Mexican water. And dying of dysentry as usual.
My understanding is that those droplets contain millions of virus’ and those individual virus’ can go through the filter. So if they’re laying on the mask and the droplets dry those virus’ can get through ...
That's guaranteed.
So was the election of Barack Obama, but it still happened. People are like cattle--they tend to stampede when panicked.
BTTT
Remember this from 4 years ago?
The World Health Organization said 2 shipments of “killer influenza virus “ went missing in Mexico and Lebanon.

"There's absolutely no reason to panic."
