My wife is Catholic. Though not active in the church, I would describe her as spiritual, and without a doubt, faithful. Like millions of people this morning, while perusing Yahoo News, she and I saw the image of Michael D'Antuono’s “The Truth”. In case you haven’t seen “The Truth”, it is a painting essentially depicting Barack Obama as the Messiah in a “presidential” motif.
At first, we dismissed it like the rest of the fawning media imagery of Obama. Remember that AP photo of Obama framed in front of the Presidential Seal as though it was a halo? We rolled our eyes, voiced our disgust, and continued on with our morning.
Then tonight, while having dinner, that painting became the topic of discussion. Before too long, my wife found herself in tears. “How dare they equate Obama to Jesus”. She didn’t say it anger, but in sadness. Her point was this: To portray Obama (or any man) as Jesus doesn’t elevate Obama, it belittles Jesus. To belittle Jesus in that fashion is not simply distasteful or offensive, it is hurtful. As my wife put it: “Jesus was put on this earth to save our souls, Obama was not.” She then took a Cross pendant from her jewelry box. She hasn’t worn a Cross in years, but as she put it on, she said “I just feel the need to do something”.
I also felt the need to do something , so I decided to write down my thoughts on the subject, which you are reading now. Before that however, I figured I should find out a little about Mr. D'Antuono, so I checked out his website “Can You Handle the Truth?”. It turns out D'Antuono’s work has mostly dealt with mid 20th century pop-culture; 1950s style noir illustrations. Elvis, the Rat Pack etc., done in the style of old Dick Tracy cartoons. Actually, it’s pretty good stuff.
“The Truth” is D'Antuono first foray into politics. To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure if “The Truth” is a praise of Obama, or a criticism of Obama’s followers, or a little of both.
Whatever D'Antuono’s intent, a few important points remain:
The blind cult following of Obama is dangerous..Very dangerous. Whether intentional or not, the unveiling of “The Truth” on Obama’s 100th day in office will likely feed this cult following, while at the same time further tear down Christianity, and the faith of millions of Americans.
I can only return to the tears in my wife’s eyes as she tried to digest the image of Obama as the Messiah. Whatever the intent of the artist, we live in a time where the love of God and country are under attack. We live in a time where “change” is coming, like it or not. We live in a time where a painting that is disrespectful of Jesus and the Christian faith is celebrated, and the depiction of a politician as a Messianic figure is encouraged.
In other words… “The Truth” hurts.
My question to Dear Leader is: will you raise our taxes to build the prisons you're going to throw us into,
or are you simply going to have us all executed?
The same thing happens on Wall Street.
“better” or “worse” than expected is what matters, often more so than how your competitors are really doing, or who is really winning in the marketplace.
So?
So presenting Obama as a “Savior” is rather dumb, but Obama can not resist it, he is such an ego maniac!
And, his cult following is too stupid to know that they are only going to make his decent into mortal, common, failure even more stark!
I have an idea. I’m going to get an Obama action figure and a jar. I’ll place the Obama action figure in the jar. Then, I’ll take a leak in the jar and call it “Piss Obama” and demand a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Usually narcissistic fascist leaders wear a military uniform with medals. Obama’s got this iconic saviour gig.
The truth does hurt. It hurts that Christ who gave his life for us is so ridiculed and ignored. As well as railed against. But those that have faith and understanding will not be led astray by trash like this. There will be more of it. And more and more we individually are going to stand up for Christ in our actions and deeds, or, we are not. It is a very individual choice each will make, one way or the other.
Or I should say, I used to hate vanities.

Bless your wife. I have a feeling Obama may just drive throngs to Christ before we dispense with this administration.

Wow. Thank you dersepp. Yes, my wife is one great lady. Her reaction to that painting was very difficult to properly put into words, but I felt I had to try. I'm flattered that you want to share those words.

Her reaction is one of a believer....we are pained when people mar the face of the Savior. However, as a believer, she must also take heart that Christ has overcome the world.
