WASHINGTON - Campaigning before a church congregation on Chicagos South Side one Sunday in July 2007, Barack Obama said an epidemic of big city violence was sickening the soul of this nation.
Among the potential cures, he said, was permanently reinstating a ban on assault weapons.
One-hundred days into his presidency, President Obama says it remains a goal. But it is one the White House has been forced to abandon.

That, my FRiends, is the krux of the matter. The AWB cost the Dems control of Congress last time. These guys don't want to be sacrificial pawns to Sarah Brady's agenda.
It was been illegal for the general public to purchase an assault weapon since the passage of the 1934 National Firearms Act. In order to be an assault weapon, it must have full-auto capability. However, the lib's/anti-gunner’s have applied the term to many semi-auto’s such as the semi-auto, AR-15 sold commercially here in the U.S. These firearms have the same functionality as the Remington BAR and the mini-14, Springfield Garand, others. It is more accurate to refer to the Brady Bill/Assault Weapons Ban as the Ugly Gun Bill. It's all about looks and nothing about functionality. Sadly, most of those who get their news via NBC/CBS/NBC will never learn the difference...
A CCW class informs and educates you about what you can and can't do when placed in a shoot or don't shoot situation.
I don't see the need for full auto weapons as infantry weapons, unless of course you are going to be in a mass attack. Even then you are likely to run out of ammo before you run out of enemy. I am just a big bullet 30 caliber slower fire kind of guy. Firing a 308Win even semi-auto is not going to be very effective in full auto mode. Semi-auto, yep that's for me.
And yes, if you want a real assault rifle, you should be able to get one. Bullets are bullets and don't care what actian they are launched from.
There is no such thing as an assault weapon. Assault weapon is a made up, perjorative term that was codified in USC concering about 17 semi-automatic rifles, certain handguns (tec-9) and shotguns (usas12, streetsweeper, etc).
The gun control crowd is VERY good at using verbage to confuse issues and swing issues in their way.
At first, the gun grabbers concocked "COP KILLER BULLETS", made by KTW (owned by 3 cops, sold only to cops in the early 80s). So why would cops need to purchase KTW "cop killer bullets"? Duh. The Brady bunch and gun-banners knew that rank and file cops supported gun rights, and used "cop killer" bullet fabrication to get them to support some gun control (death by a thousand cuts).
Next came junk guns (what I call, affordable self defense)...usually made of inferior metal and were truely pieces of crap.....but nonetheless capable for self defense of the poor and minorities.
After that came the infamous "assault weapon" fiasco.
NOTE: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN ASSAULT WEAPON!
The brady bunch successfully confused the ignorant that "assault weapons" were fully, automatic assault rifles (origin of the word="Sturmgewher" or "storm rifle". An assault rifle has three (3) characteristics:
1) uses an intermediate round (between pistol and rifle
2) Can fire either semi-automatic or fully automatic
3) Switches between fires by using a selector switch.
You are correct in that the NFA ACT of 1934 restricted Title 2 arms (machineguns, select fire rifles, destructive devices, any other weapon (AOW-cane gun, zip gun, etc), suppressors (aka silencer), and short barrel shotguns and rifles). However, you were successfully confused by the verbage of the intentional confusion put out by the brady bunch on the words "assault weapon" (made up word), and "assault rifle" (historical term).
FYI: IN CONCLUSION:
Assault rifle came into being circa 1942-1943 with the Stg 43/MP44....
Assault weapon came into being circa late 1980s to early 1990s.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN ASSAULT WEAPON as it pertains to firearms!
Rust never sleeps...
Time to ban high-cap cities. Nobody needs to live in a communnity of more than 100,000 people.
I have made it into an inkless pocket stamp.......BHO’s BS in print gets thus “stamped” where I find it !
The original idea for it goes to another good freeper here at FR .....:o)
Simple statement thru symbolism .....
Ummm,
Being that we are on the same side of the gun issue I am willing to “let it go” so to speak. Have a good weekend :)
Well, we all know that guns can think for themselves and fire themselves and often go on killing rampages. Are you trying to tell me that having black furniture doesn't make them even more aggressive and doesn't mean they can speak Bulgarian? How about OD?
Wow! I have to say that again: Wow! He actually said that? Talk about prescience.
I’m in the market for a good semi-auto 12ga. If you had a budget of 1,000 what would you recommend?
Saiga 12
I asked an Asian vendor in a flea market about a knife and he thought I was talking about a switch blade. He looked at me and said "Irregal". Five seconds later he pulled one out of his pocket and named a price.
That’s why I keep all my black guns in a safe. They can make all the noise they want, but they can’t get out to go on a shooting rampage.
A shotgun like that is perfect for homeland defense. If someone is downstairs, get your kids into the master bedroom, take cover, cover the door with the shotgun and call the cops.
The pistol is for when you run out of shells for your shotgun.
and second and maybe stooopid question, how does the stamp work???
remington 11-87 police model or a used Benelli M1 Super-90
