Well, that’s what they get for making underachiever look bad. It’s only fair.

Asian-Americans are about 12 percent of California's population and 4 percent of the U.S. population overall.

That's more of a minority than either blacks or Hispanics.

Oh wait, I forgot, "minority" is liberal doublespeak for any uneducated group that the leftists want to keep down in order to stay in power.

At least these schools can look forward to much better frat parties.

Remember the words of the inimitable Dr. Sowell. I paraphrase - “Over or under-representation in any field of human endeavor is the norm and not the exception.” Those pesky Asian-Americans do very well indeed in academia. How in the hell do they achieve this standard of excellence while being a minority and ergo, suppressed and oppressed by the man?

here’s a radical thought

why not just accept those who have the highest grades into the school instead of basing it on race, religion or what ever groups the left likes to give

When they Asian who are they referring to
Chinese or Indian, Pakistani or Thai
Asia is a big coiuntry with different looks

I wish they would be more precise if they are going to class people

In the UK they call Pakistanis, paki for short Asians as the left deems the words Pakistani or paki racist

So when the police issue a look out , they say Asian male
Not exactly direct is it and they wonder they they never catch anyone

Uh... the truth is that the system is already stacked against Asian students, and it's not the white students that are taking their earned slots.

But until now, it wasn't PC for them to raise objections, since it was not the white students whose slots were being expanded.

IMHO, the UC system should be sold off to the private sector and save the taxpayer's money.

Then it would not be a political football.

They're just upset because they haven't learned to feel guilty about their undeserved privileges yet. (Seriously, the whole "privilege" concept is key to understanding how liberals are currently defining racist -- see here.)

So instead of finding out why poor-to-middle income Asians do significantly better at school than poor-to-middle income Blacks and poor-to-middle income Hispanics— liberals just ask for more money!! Unbelievable.

"I think it's extremely unfair to Asian-Americans on the one hand...

But it's fair that half the students are Asian when only 12% of Californians are Asian? Imagine how outraged he'd be if the percentage of whites students was four times their population percentages. He'd blow a gasket.

Note he mentioned Asian-Americans. No one has any problem with an Asian-American getting admitted over a nonAsian-American, as long as his grades are better, all other things being equal. Admissions should be grade-based and strictly competitive, imo, race playing no role whatsoever.

What I didn't like when I was at UC, was the huge number of Chinese nationals who gain admission over American students. The place was overflowing with them, both among the undergraduate and graduate ranks.

And forget about the number of Chinese professors! Of all the Chinese professors in the math and physics departments at the two campuses I attended, only one was a natural born American citizen. The rest were all foreign nationals. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them were spies. Even dropped a couple of classes because their accents were so bad, you couldn't understand a thing they were saying.

The new policy, approved unanimously by the UC Board of Regents in February, will greatly expand the applicant pool, eliminate the requirement that applicants take two SAT subject tests and reduce the number of students guaranteed admission based on grades and test scores alone. It takes effect for the freshman class of fall 2012.
President defends policy Some Asian-Americans have charged that the university is trying to reduce Asian-American enrollment. Others say that may not be the intent, but it will be the result.
UC officials adamantly deny the intent is to increase racial diversity, and reject allegations the policy is an attempt to circumvent a 1996 voter-approved ban on affirmative action.
"The primary goal is fairness and eliminating barriers that seem unnecessary," UC President Mark Yudof said. "It means that if you're a parent out there, more of your sons' and daughters' files will be reviewed."

Voters? What do they matter? Test scores? Who cares about 'em? We need a BETTER way to do things! We need a SMART admission policy! /libthink>

Perhaps if the students in question stopped identifying themselves as a specific hyphenated ethnic group - they would have better luck convincing others, they should not be discriminated against when they’re in the majority.

Just saying.

Racism is racism.

I don’t know any (white) American, not even one I have ever met, who has identified as “European-American”.

Not one.

Ever.
