Gun sales going ballistic
Fears of regulation, crime spur sales of firearms and ammo

Everyone interviewed by The Post-Star for this story agreed ammunition of all calibers has gotten tougher to find, as gun owners stock up. Prices skyrocketed in recent years as metal prices went up, which caused many gun owners to stock up in anticipation of rising ammunition prices.

There are also concerns that some larger calibers, or those used by military-type weapons, could be banned, restricted or taxed more heavily.

One northern Warren County resident found out recently the government is paying attention to such ammunition sales.

West said a customer of his recently stocked up on .223-caliber rounds, a caliber often used in assault-style weapons. The customer bought 1,000 rounds a few months ago through a mail order company.

Shortly after the purchase, he received a visit from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, whose interest was apparently piqued by a large-scale purchase of that caliber.

"His wife was home. He was at church," West said.

DDR = Deutche Democratische Republik = East Germany

Ok, that is what I was kind of thinking.

I kept turning DDR into Department of Dangerous Republicans, LOL.

How dare you try to inject critical thinking and reason into this discussion when the more appropriate response is to run around screaming that the sky is falling...

Bloat - with CASH (If you can find Ammo in a retail store)

West said his business hasn't seen a big rise in gun sales, but it has seen a rise in people wishing to sell guns to his store for economic reasons. He said one man recently brought in an 80-year-old antique rifle to sell because he needed money. "We've had guys come in with three or four guns to sell," he said.

There A LOT of that going around these days for some odd reason, Ahem.....

Wow! 1,000rnds is nothing! That used to be a fun day out at the range plinking(back when you could shoot all you wanted and not give a thought to ammo prices and scarcity).

Show us your paperz! I heard that first-hand from the VoPos in the DDR. Not fun.

So did I. Ironically, he was shaking down a communist hippie peacenik from San Francisco. We could not contain our laughter, once he was done with him and we were back underway.

"the government is paying attention to such ammunition sales"

I feel safer already.

And now it's no longer "assault weapons", but "assault-style weapons". To better enable future bans, no doubt.

I can run that much .223 through my AR in about 2 hours if I’m having a good day groupin’ em up :)

If DHS is really visiting folks for that small of a purchase, they will need to hire more agents.

IAC, IMHO, if anything is going to happen it would be subsequent to the major gun shows (probably most with at least one or two ATF personnel in attendance). However, I've seen (and experienced) multiple-case buys going out the door with no subsequent problems.

Back around the time of the election, I went out and got my CCW and bought a Glock27 for carry. I'd seen what happened to guns under Clinton, and I knew there would be a major rush on guns under Obama.

I also bought Smith and Wesson stock in late October @ $1.91 per share. Over the past six months it's increased to $6.70 per share, and shows no sign of stopping. It's incredible, I've never seen anything like it. That's about 350% growth in this market.

If they are sending federal agents out to explore 1,000 round purchases, they have WAY to many marginally-employed feds on the payroll.

As many here are pointing out, the statement in the article sounds like one of those tall tales that some gun store clerks can be prone to telling.

They can't be getting this stupid. Heck, there are thousand round packs on sale a sportsman retail outlets. Some defense/security training courses (like Blackwater et al) require that you show up with 2,500 rounds just to take the dang course.

My response. None of your business.

Think the government doesn't know who has guns of what caliber? Those sons of bitches are illegally watching everything they can to gather data on who has what.

The CMP recently instituted a limit of 25 “cans” per year, where a “can” contains either 240 rounds boxed or 192 rounds in clips.

If you go with the “boxed” variety, that’s 6000 rounds potentially in one order.

And that’s .30-06, not .223.
