In Rommel's case, he was reliably and correctly linked to the July 20th assasination plot. Rommel was a hero in the eyes of the German people. For it to be publicly known that he had backed the plot to assasinate Hitler would have been a blow to Hitler's prestige. For the most part, the other plotters were unknowns. (Speer was not a plotter, but the plotters had hoped to induce him to assume a role in the post-Hitler government. It almost cost him his life.)

I'm certainly no authority on the subject, but don't males usually kill themselves away from their families? It seems very odd that he did this in the middle of the night while his wife and children were presumably sleeping.
One hates to speculate while the body is still literally warm, but it's just a little odd. If this guy's been at Fannie for 16 years, he not only knows where the bodies are buried, but he may have helped to bury some of them.
