At the African First Ladies Health Summit, which started on Monday in Los Angeles, one woman stood out... Chantal is the second wife of President Paul Biya of Cameroon. She was born to a French father and a Cameroonian beauty pageant winner. She is famous in Cameroon for her hairstyles. Her signature look even has a name: the banane
Her luxuriant hair caused a stir when we published a picture of her in our pictures of the day gallery. One blogger wrote "all hail the Fierce Ruling First Lady of Cameroon"
Pope Benedict XVI arrives at the presidential palace of Cameroon president Paul Biya and his wife Chantal in Yaounde on March 18, 2009
I bet Carla Bruni isn't used to be upstaged.

“What is the name of the animal she is wearing on her head?”
I think it’s called a Cocker Spaniel.
WOOF!!
I thought that the dog was what was under the hair. ;-)
how many wives does he have?
He;s Catholic, not Muslim.
I was halfway kidding anyway
Not my cup of tea...but at least she’s trying to look like she’s treating the Pope with some respect.
She's a big lady and magnifies it, doesn't try to hide it like 'chelle does. She doesn't appear to have a posture problem either. She certainly enjoys the moments she's participating in. She has a pleasant face.
I like the costumes and that hair on her. One must have chutzpah to wear those. Although they're gaudy, they're tastefully done. The dress lines work on her. At least she's "different" and does not try to copy anyone. She's original.
Looking at her, we know exactly who she is, whereas with 'chelle we have no clue. She tries to be something she's not.
I think she is wearing 5 of them.
Nobody did that better than Carol...:)
I agree. I shudder to think of that beauty pageant, but...she looks like she has personality and probably would be fun to talk to at a cocktail party!
(Admittedly without knowing anything about her, her politics or anything else...I figure if someone can wear hair like that with a big smile, then they got SUMTHIN!)
Best line in that skit is when Harvey Korman says "Nice Dress" and Carol Replies:
"I saw it in the window and simply could not resist."
One of the ladies in our church is from Africa. She and her husband wear some truly amazing dressy clothes from their native land. Easter was one of those special occasions, as was Christmas and the baptism of their son. The hats are really beautiful, although I remember worrying about the godmother’s hat catching fire during the baby’s baptism, as she stood very close to some of the candles!
Exactly! Nice catch!
In the fifth photo it shows she really has a beautiful face.
The hair...well, “fierce” is an apt description. She has a cowlick from Hell.
She’s showing dignified respect to the Pope and looks like she’s truly enjoying the visit. Can you imagine the look of absolute disgust on the face of Mrs. Zero should she be put in the same position? Not to mention, she’s not trying to horn in on photos or inappropriately embrace the Pope.
She has a nice figure from what the photos show and good posture—doesn’t look like she slumps around in a fashion reminiscent of Sasquatch.
I like her! Can we trade?
LMBO! Perfect!
Visible proof that standing out is not outstanding.
