Creation institute sues coordinating board

By Ralph K.M. Haurwitz

April 21, 2009

The Dallas-based Institute for Creation Research Graduate School has sued the state’s higher education agency for denying permission to offer a master’s degree in science education.

The Bible-oriented group contends in a lawsuit filed last week in federal court that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board violated its civil rights. The suit, first reported by the Dallas Morning News, argues that the coordinating board discriminated against the institute because it doesn’t support evolution.

Members of the coordinating board, who are gubernatorial appointees, voted 8-0 a year ago to reject the degree proposal. Higher Education Commissioner Raymund Paredes said at the time that the institute’s program, based on a literal interpretation of biblical creation, falls outside the realm of science and therefore could not be designated “science” or “science education.”

De Juana Lozada, a spokeswoman for the coordinating board, said today that the agency could not comment on the pending litigation.

Proposed legislation would exempt the institute from the coordinating board’s rules. The measure, authored by Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, is pending in the House Higher Education Committee. No hearing has been scheduled for House Bill 2800, making its prospects for passage doubtful.

Well, duh. If they want to give out master’s degrees in science education, they have to teach, well, science.

Anything would look more like science than evolution(ism). Voodoo and Rastafari are better science than evolution.

This would seem to be for the ordained and other interested parties. I’m all for physics and theology, but I can’t see a degree for so-called “creationism” that cannot be substantiated.

I wonder how the Evos would feel if creationists pulled their accreditation's because we don't agree with their viewpoint!

How is hatred of science a conservative position? I can’t understand the hatred of science here. The poster also claims that AIDS isn’t caused by HIV contrary to all of the scientifically published material.

There’s no hatred of science here; just hatred of stupid and dangerous ideological doctrines which masquerade as science.

Liberals are fixated on control. Their fixation spreads to all areas so this is no surprise. This is what liberals do when they are in power.

I have watched many die from AIDS. Godgunsguts doesn't believe that AIDS is caused by HIV (see the profile). He/she has a ping list. There is lots of peer-reviewed evidence that AIDS is caused by HIV. There is none that says otherwise.

I am a practicing Christian. I believe that God created everything. I also believe that creationism isn't supportable scientifically. The fact that Godgunsguts is part of a very small fringe group that attacks medical scientists as well as "evos" suggests his/her problem is with science itself and not evolution in particular.

The article is brief, and unfortunately fails to note that the same degrees have been offered on an accredited basis for decades in California. When the (demonstrably) corrupt BoE in California tried to shut down the ICR graduate school, ICR won a resounding legal victory. (And the head of the BoE subsequently wound up in an orange jumpsuit picking up garbage by the roadside after he failed to explain why his wife was pulling in a 6-figure income as an "educational consultant"... but that's another story.)

In a free market parents and students should be able to choose their education freely. Accreditation agencies are voluntary organizations, and should likewise be able to operate without government controls on what constitutes "proper" beliefs. And then ultimately the marketplace will decide which educational options are helpful or not.

Students in the ICR grad program learn the evolutionary explanations and their shortfalls, whereas evo-brainwashed students only learn the first part. Looks like the Texas BoE wants to keep students from having the option of pursuing a more critically-minded education. Once again, evolutionism proves the antithesis of freedom and liberty.

I suppose you also believe the same about the ressurection of Christ? That is what a consistent mindset of methodological naturalism would conclude.

I have argued with The Poster about HIV/AIDS and think his view is wrong but I didn’t see any hatred of science. What

I did see The Poster....Well, I’m not going to make his case for him, he can do that better than I, but I will say much of what is termed “science” is the speculations and fanciful musings by those who should know better and it gets published.

Dude, there is no such thing as “creation-science.” This is getting up there with stupid left-wing degrees like “fashio-design,” “queer studies (what is that studying-how to be gay?,” and “liberation theology.”

Gee, “hospice nurse” = nurse that advocates death, thus a nurse that does not nurse. Very scientific!

Maybe a course on pornography as art and discovering homosexuality in literature would help the ICR get accredited.

Why are you being rude and insulting? That you factually incorrect goes without saying - but these personal attacks are simply strange.
