“three model rocket engines containing an explosive mixture”

I wonder if these were the small over the counter a-c style estes ones or the big reloadable high power metal tubes that he had put his own mix in?

The article said it was a connecting flight that the Marine was making at Logan, and normally the baggage is not rechecked with connecting flights. And it would not have been checked, except for a mistake in how the baggage got routed at Logan. Because of the mistake, they did the baggage check again, and that’s how they discovered the material.

It also said that certain items need to be “declared” and then it’s okay. I’m not sure if that includes *all* of what he had there or not (the article is not entirely clear on that).

So, basically, that sort of says to me that he declared them at his origin point but had no need to declare them on a connecting flight, because normally, the baggage is not checked again. Because of a mistake, the officials did check the baggage again — and then they say — he did not “declare” the items. Well, how could you declare them again, if you are told that they are not checked again with a connecting flight?

The whole thing sounds sort of screwy to me...

I’ll bet he did declare it at the originating flight.

I'm siding with him being set up.
Timing is too convenient.

There was a news story a few weeks ago where someone had their clothes stolen from their checked suitcases. The baggage clerk that did this was caught. Wonder if the same may have happened here. Someone slipped the stuff in there.

You know, you may be right. But TSA has got to look like they know what they’re doing (even in the absence of a clue) and Napolitano, at DHS, who oversees TSA will certainly pull every lever to gain maximum political impact here.

“Reed was charged with possession of an infernal machine”

This is what the Globe is, ideologically. Recently it commended a book which portrayed God as acting abominably. But it is they who support many things which are just that.

I was in that very terminal on Friday afternoon, heading home to Columbus via Laguardia. Yikes.

BOSTON — A marine was found to have a firearm, fuses, and detonators in his checked bag at Logan Airport.

22-year-old Justin W. Reed was traveling from Las Vegas to Boston and was set to continue on to Charlotte, NC.

He had a couple of checked bags and one of them accidentally ended up in the luggage carousel.

Because that mistake was made, the bag had to be screened before it was put back on the plane.

Authorities say this was a lucky mistake because normally checked bags from connecting flights never get screened.

Strangely enough, I saw no military uniforms at either Logan or LaGuardia. I must admit though, I was still recovering from my first leg of the day; a horribly rough ride on a SAAB 340 from Presque Isle, ME to Boston. I hate commuter prop jobs.
