Yedioth Achronoth, the largest circulation daily in Israel, reports today that President Obama intends to see the two-state solution signed, sealed and delivered during his first term.
Rahm Emanuel told an (unnamed) Jewish leader; "In the next four years there is going to be a permanent status arrangement between Israel and the Palestinians on the basis of two states for two peoples, and it doesn't matter to us at all who is prime minister."
He also said that the United States will exert pressure to see that deal is put into place.
"Any treatment of the Iranian nuclear problem will be contingent upon progress in the negotiations and an Israeli withdrawal from West Bank territory," the paper reports Emanuel as saying.
In other words, US sympathy for Israel's position vis a vis Iran depends on Israel's willingness to live up to its commitment to get out of the West Bank and permit the establishment of a Palestinian state there, in Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
Yedioth also reports that Obama is conveying his displeasure with the new Israeli government in several ways.
"US administration officials informed Netanyahu that President Obama will not be able to meet with him in early May, while the AIPAC conference is held in Washington.
The meeting between the new Israeli premier and the president of the United States is perceived in Israel as a sign that the formation process of the new government has been completed and as a salutation by Israel's close friend.
Netanyahu had hoped to capitalize on the opportunity and to meet with Obama during the annual AIPAC conference, but the Americans informed the Israelis that Obama was not going to be 'in town.'
That being the case, the inclination among Netanyahu's aides is to cancel his trip to attend the AIPAC conference and to try to secure a date for a meeting with Obama later in May.
"Sources in Washington also said that the Obama administration would not continue the tradition that developed during the Bush administration of hosting Israeli premiers many times during the year, sometimes with just a phone call's advance notice."
So far neither the White House or the Israeli government has commented on the report which, it should be noted, comes from Shimon Shiffer, one of Israel's most highly respected journalists.
Israel won’t stand for being dissed and isoloated
like this. They’ll build their own defense industry,
weapons, fighter aircraft in time, if 0 continues
to mess with them so blatantly and despicably. He’s
gonna undo defense contracts that Pres. Bush approved,
the sob.
They will, oh....they will...
I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Frighteningly & Obviously they dont know or dont care :(
They will, oh....they will...
It is beyond reprehensible. Shame on Emanuel,
~~~
Ditto! Beyond shameful and evil.
Who the hell do they think that they are by telling Israel what to do? What are they going to do when Israel does what they want anyway?
Yes but he is good at ballet
Unfortunately, we American’s will suffer because of this, too...NOT to the degree they will, though.
You know, the sad thing is that among our politicians today, that is probably an accurate statement. Israel has no BETTER friend than zero.
Obama’s nuanced diplomacy only fools the college kids and intelligensia of America. The Israelis will tell him where to put his Hamas-favored peace treaty. Then he can fail and blame the Israelis.
Israel stands ready to bomb Iran’s nuclear sites
I’d hate to be in Obama’s shoes if he starts messing with God’s chosen people, and I would hate to be in our shoes (as a nation) if/when he does it!
I know .... God won’t be mocked.
I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Time for Israel to activate another one of their young female operatives in the states and bring Obama down like they did with Monica and Clinton...snark
No one should really be surprised with this. It was all apparent and obvious during the campaign and for any one who cares about Israel and Israeli security(and these days Israeli security and US security tend to overlap) the evidence was overwhleming as to wher Obama’s sympathies lie and what kind of President he’d be. It was all there.
Given that only 22% of jews voted for McCain I have to conclude that nowadays there is a large segment of jews that just doesn’t care all that much about Israel.
I think the longer we get from the Holocaust and the days of the 67 and 73 wars when Israel’s very existence was at stake and you have a younger genration who have always known Israel and take it for granted that it’s not the issue it is for older jews who may remember a world without Israel or news coverage of the 67 and 73 wars when its fate hung in the balance.
I don’t know if the Jewish vote was broken down by age but I’d bet that if you just took say Jews over 50, McCain did much better than the overall 22% he got, and among Jews over 60 I’d say he did more than much better.
But it’s like in Genesis when there arose a new Pharoah who did not know Joseph...there has arisen a new Jewish population that just doesn’t know or doesn’t care or both.
Sad but True as Metallica might say.
Would he also support a 2 state solution in the US...liberal and conservative?
