(CNN) -- The Cuban government, long the object of a U.S. economic blockade, is prepared to meet with the Obama administration, Cuba's leader said.
We've told the North American government, in private and in public, that we are prepared, wherever they want, to discuss everything -- human rights, freedom of the press, political prisoners -- everything, everything, everything that they want to discuss," Cuban President Raúl Castro said Thursday at a summit of leftist Latin American leaders in Venezuela.
The response came days after President Obama lifted all restrictions on the ability of American citizens to visit relatives in Cuba as well as to send them remittances. Travel restrictions for Americans of non-Cuban descent will remain in place.
This week's move represents a significant shift in a U.S. policy that had remained largely unchanged for nearly half a century. The U.S. government instituted the embargo three years after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.
In Mexico City for meetings with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama offered a carrot and a stick to Havana.

What needs to happen in Cuba is something like what we did to Germany after WWII.
Justice, not revenge.
Outlaw the Communist party.
Criminal trials for party officials.
Demilitarize the island
Just for starters.
Anything less than this and it will be like Venezuela or Mexico is today.
With the CAFN becoming a mouthpiece for Hussein, I am tempted to give up on the hope that the normally conservative Cuban-American community can hold together.

You guys beat me to it. Yep, you can see where this is going: If Obama has his way, our next bailout beneficiary will be Cuba.
He’s willing to discuss Social Security payments to Cubans, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, free abortions, money to build roads, modernize their farms, rebuild Havana, etc. all at the expense of U.S. citizens who pay taxes.
It would be nice to go there again for vacation like in the early 20th century......but only if it becomes democratic.

how is the Cubans feeling about all of this ,i thought they never wanted to see any kind of talks with their old country until the Castro’s have gone?
Please don’t tell me that the Cubans here are happy that we now will talk with Castro when in the past they never wanted to give legitimacy

Obama knows what his priorities are as president. It’s a pity that no one else does, otherwise we wouldn’t have elected him.
