The day started off with rain. Fortunately the rain had ended by the time of the Tea Party. Even so, there was an overcast and chilly wind, with temperature of 45 degrees. Despite the unfavorable weather, the Shelby County/Sidney (Ohio) Tea Party was a success. Estimated turnout about 500 people. Not bad for town of 20,000 people.
Speakers included our State Senator and our State Representative. A former Sidney mayor read a statement from our Congressman, who was speaking in person at Tea Party in Dayton. Other local citizens spoke, including yours truly. The speeches weren't polished, but they were heartfelt. There's a lot of anger out here in "flyover land."
One striking thing occurred at mention of our senior US Senator, George Voinovich. When he first ran for governor, over 15 years ago, Shelby County was one of the only two counties in the state that he carried. Yet simple mention of his name at the Tea Party brought hoots of derision from the crowd. In two terms as governor and nearly two terms as senator, he has managed to squander all the good will and support he had back then. He is not unique in this, but I think he symbolizes much greater change in America in recent years. We are fed up with the government that we can't seem to put out of office.
Here are some pictures from the Tea Party.
Most tea parties prohibited the political hacks from speaking. Why give them another platform? The tea parties were supposed to be THE PEOPLE speaking. We already know the politicians promise one thing and then do another.
We’ll see how it all went when congress comes back next week.
As for me, the only pictures I want to see of a politican is when he is rejected from office in 2010. All of them that are due for re-elect.
