DHS: Statement by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary
DHS ^ | 4/15/09 | DHS

Posted on 04/15/2009 12:18:38 PM PDT by angeliquemb9

Release Date: April 15, 2009

For Immediate Release Office of the Press Secretary Contact: 202-282-8010

The primary mission of this department is to prevent terrorist attacks on our nation. The document on right-wing extremism sent last week by this department’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis is one in an ongoing series of assessments to provide situational awareness to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies on the phenomenon and trends of violent radicalization in the United States. I was briefed on the general topic, which is one that struck a nerve as someone personally involved in the Timothy McVeigh prosecution.

Let me be very clear: we monitor the risks of violent extremism taking root here in the United States. We don’t have the luxury of focusing our efforts on one group; we must protect the country from terrorism whether foreign or homegrown, and regardless of the ideology that motivates its violence.

We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity but we do not – nor will we ever – monitor ideology or political beliefs. We take seriously our responsibility to protect the civil rights and liberties of the American people, including subjecting our activities to rigorous oversight from numerous internal and external sources.

I am aware of the letter from American Legion National Commander Rehbein, and my staff has already contacted him to set up a meeting next week once I return from travel. I will tell him face-to-face that we honor veterans at DHS and employ thousands across the department, up to and including the Deputy Secretary.

As the department responsible for protecting the homeland, DHS will continue to work with its state and local partners to prevent and protect against the potential threat to the United States associated with any rise in violent extremist activity.

Subtext: The American Legion is an influential and powerful voting block that we don’t want to alienate so we’ll do something in the PR vein to smooth things over with them.

Page 64 of the classified report states:

(U//LES) Bloggers and posters on Free Republic possess combat skills, intelligence and experience that fit the definition of rightwing extremists and are capitalizing on the election of the first Marxist Socialist American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.

"personally involved in the Timothy McVeigh prosecution"

The Big Lefty Lie. Tell it enough times and people will believe it.

The Anti-American Left will throw out the names of Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph, forever, as "examples" of "right-wing extremists".

There are a number of problems with this, of course. The Left has tried to tie both of them to certain groups. McVeigh is always mentioned as having ties to "militia groups", though there is no evidence that he had such ties. Plus, the documentaries I've seen on the US Militia Movement, show the members as being generally blue-collar Democrats, not right-wing at all.

Rudolph is always cast as a member of the "Religious Right". But Rudolph has stated that he is more Agnostic and wasn't against abortion due to religious reasons. Yes, I know - don't confuse Liberals with the facts.

The biggest problem is the Left's silence on the issue of Left-Wing nut cases, who have done considerably more damage and who actually belong to various anti-American groups. John Allen Muhammed and his illegal-alien buddy, Malvo, would be a good place to start.

Don’t forget the actions of Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland. They reportedly murdered a journalist, smashed up a liquor store for poisoning the community, and engaged in other criminal political practices.

If you are to the Right of John McCain, you might be a right-wing extremist in the eyes of not only the Obama Administration but in the eyes of Senator McCain and others within the GOP...

Left wing extremist is not a term that exists in their lexicon.

Well, if that were really the case, Mz. Napolitano, there would have been another pamphlet sent out with the one attacking "right wing" extremists, and it would have given equal concern and insult, to the left wing extremist groups (who really are violent, BTW). You know, Earth First, ACORN, ANSWER, Code Pink, WCW, RCP, New Black Panther Party, SDS, etc...

But since you didn't file a threat report on those groups, you are most certainly "monitoring idology and political beliefs". Busted.

Trying to stir up a problem that doesn’t exist

Recall too that the FBI went on a Presidential ordered wild goosechase to investigate a false claim that there was a rash of racist church fires in the South.

Bill Clinton's propaganda campaign took the FBI off the task of protecting this nation. It was in this time frame that the 9-11 hijackers overstayed their visas, trained for their suicide mission as pilots who were only concered with flying (not landing) planes, and probably communicated with terrorists abroad.

Such stunts have repurcusions. What they were, we may never fully know since Sandy Berger stole and destroyed classified documents from the National Archives.

And for those who claim that this is "Bush's fault" for creating a homeland security department, note how Bill Clinton used the FBI. Also note how Hillary Clinton was illegally in possession of 900 FBI files.

Those politicians who want to violate Americans' rights will do so regardless.

Time Magazine called the Unabomber (an Al Gore fan) a mad genius. They must’ve felt his goals and ideals were honorable even if his tactics put people at risk.

The actions of John Lindh were excused as the actions of a young man on a spiritual quest.

The treasonous slander from John Kerry to Congress during the Vietnam war was later called the words of an angry young man (not treason).

The New York Times championed William Ayers (and thousands of professors signed a protest in his support).

Radical Chic still exists among liberal intelligentsia.

Reminds me of a time in 1979, one of the fellow fighter pilots from Langley AFB wrote a letter to the editor complaining about the treatment of the fighter community. Two days later a Colonel from the Pentagon was there with a stack of overheads to give all the pilots an hour long briefing on how good we had it. Obviously we were mistaken.

I've been against this DHS from the get go. Now folks are getting wise to why I've held that point of view.

"Terrorist" was ambiguously defined on purpose to potentially include anyone. Same thing with the patriot act.
