"The Boston College Campus Police have seized the electronics of a computer science student for allegedly sending an email outing another student. The probable cause? The search warrant application states that he is 'a computer science major' and he uses 'two different operating systems for hiding his illegal activity. One is the regular B.C. operating system and the other is a black screen with white font which he uses prompt commands on.' The EFF is currently representing him."
Good for the EFF.
when did you get a job for the boston police department?
“One is the regular B.C. operating system and the other is a black screen with white font which he uses prompt commands on.”
Lol...classic
This little article neglects to mention that the kid is also suspected of hacking into the Unversity’s system to change student grades.
Sounds like a fine place to send your child for a quality education! [/s]
The guy was accused of hacking into the grading database and fixing grades, jailbreaking cellphones and other stuff.
Linux has little to do with it.
I took a PASCAL class there in 1998. Do you think they’re looking for me?
Yes, but notice the article reveals his real crime:
“outing another student.” Oh dearie me.
When these cases go to court, a jury of your peers should at LEAST include people who are computer literate beyond sending email or turning on a box.
Ancient languages degree track?
Thanks for the info. Jailbreaking is not criminal but the grade thing might be..

What’s much more troubling is the “crime” they are investigating: sending an email outing someone as gay is a crime???
The rest of the story is nonsense. All they were doing is establishing that the accused had the means to commit the “crime.” Supposed he smashed someone’s skull with a Ming Vase, and the police noted that he was a collector of Chinese dynastic art, would the author be in hysterics about art collectors’ rights?
No, the article does nothing but spout its esposed viewpoint. Further, I don’t think he should be using University-owned systems to spread rumors about other students, be they true or false. The kid is a punk, and he got what he had coming.
All the while, across the river, Richard Stallman walks free.
You’re completely wrong. The Administration cancelled the Ayers talk once they found out about it. And they ADDED crosses to the few classrooms that didn’t have them.
Probably. The endowment took a big hit. ;-)
Not if you “contribute” to the alumni “fund”..................
