Staph scare at House gym
Politico ^ | April 15, 2009 | Glenn Thrush

Posted on 04/15/2009 6:50:01 AM PDT by COUNTrecount

A member of the House gym has been diagnosed with MRSA — a much-feared, antibiotic-resistant bacteria — and the facility has been scrubbed to eliminate the possibility that anyone will become infected.

h/t John Bresnahan

The (edited) memo from administrators at the House fitness center:

On Monday, 4/13, the HSFC was informed by a HSFC patron that they had tested positive for MRSA. This patron was requested to refrain fromusing the facility until all drainage has stopped and only after then with the area completely bandaged and covered with clothing. The patron informed the HSFC staff that they would not intend to visit the facility until the area is completely healed.

Once this incident was reported, the HSFC staff immediately contacted the CAO whom in turn contacted the Office of the Attending Physician. After all of the proper channels were informed, the HSFC staff began to thoroughly disinfect all equipment and areas in the facility.

The solution used to disinfect is the same solution used on a daily basis, Simple Green D Pro 3 disinfectant, virucidal, fungicidal. This was performed in accordance with the directives of the Office of the Attending Physician and in a manner consistent with specific product manufacturer labeling.

The first line of defense in ensuring a safe environment also rests with the HSFC patrons. To further prevent the immediate spread of disease, patrons are required per the terms of the HSFC Membership agreement to thoroughly disinfect the equipment after personal use.

In response, the HSFC has added preventative measures to help ensure the safety of our patrons. You will notice additional signage in the center reminding patrons to disinfect equipment after each use. More paper towel dispensers will be added, as well as additional spray bottle holders to foster this patron compliance. The HSFC staff will continue to thoroughly disinfect equipment, mats, locker room areas, and laundry to ensure the safety of all patrons.

Ignorance is curable, if the will exists to get over it ... try reading a little bit about antibiotic resistant strains of staph.

Oh, the environmentally friendly soap! Too bad it's not really effective. But, Nancy has declared the Capitol to be "green". Use some real disinfectant, like bleach.

With as many sexual degenerates as infest the House and Senate and their staff, I’m amazed that any healthy person would even visit the gym to work out.

The routine use of antibacterial soaps is what leaves people succeptible to all sorts of skin infections. We are normally protected by the bacteria that inhabit our bodies, not endangered by them, and killing those bacteria leaves us defenseless.

Note that hospitals are most known for staph infestations, and they ‘sanitize’ everything in sight.

Actually, although I find out congress very repugnant in this day and age, this type of staph is prevalent in hospitals, even very clean hospitals. It forms a film over itself that makes it resistant even to bleach, which is known to kill any bacteria on contact. They have recently developed something that will eat off the film and kill the bacteria, thus destroying the colonies that infest hospitals and other areas, doorknobs and walls being the two main areas for this type of staph to congregate.

I would put a snarky comment about how much these a**hats deserve to get this infection and maybe it will clean out the government but I don't want to get banned so I won't.

Good thing you held back on that comment. I am germphobic, so I think I will buy some of that Simple Green D3 stuff and have a spring clean. I haven’t done my doorknobs in ages.

Ignorance is curable, if the will exists to get over it... try reading a little bit about antibiotic resistant strains of staph.

Huh? How is it ignorant to treat staph with oral as well as topical anti-staph antibiotics? The article doesn't state if it's MRSA or VRSA only that it was "staph".

If they treated an open draining wound that had been treated with TMP-SMX, Augmentin or Clindamycin... maybe just switching to Levaquin might do the trick. But if it's resistant and hasn't been cultured then the treatment of choice is IV antibiotics with long term oral meds and nasal antibiotics till cleared by negative culture.

You're right, ignorance is curable.... but being a douche bag isn't. Try spitting out the vinegar and water.

Just re-read the article and it was MRSA. So if the guy has MRSA he might have it in his nasal cavity which is where I've seen several jocks test positive for it.

so what happens is that either a carrier or the same "treated" individual blows his nose or picks it and get the staph on the equipment and Viola... another staph infection.

"ALL soaps, are “anti-bacterial” to some extent"

Not really true. Traditional soaps are alcaline, and only perform a mechanical removal, while antibacterial soaps are acidic, and definately do kill all living organisms when used repetitively.

"They have recently developed something that will eat off the film and kill the bacteria, thus destroying the colonies that infest hospitals and other areas"

Never was needed. Common garlic, when crushed, performs the removal of biofilms quite well for about 10 minutes or so, until the alicin is oxidized out. What is interesting is that the alicin seems to only kill the pathogens, and not the beneficial bacteria. Gods products are always superior!
