President Barack Obama acknowledged in a major economic speech Tuesday that "times are still tough" and warned that a culture of "instant gratification" had produced neglect of major national problems that wound up undermining the economy.
"By no means are we out of the woods just yet," the president said in remarks at Georgetown University. "But from where we stand, for the very first time, we are beginning to see glimmers of hope. And beyond that, way off in the distance, we can see a vision of an Americas future that is far different than our troubled economic past.
Obama contended that the nation's "day of reckoning" on the economy was caused partly by "a fundamental weakness in our political system."
"For too long, too many in Washington put off hard decisions for some other time on some other day," he said. "Theres been a tendency to score political points instead of rolling up sleeves to solve real problems. There is also an impatience that characterizes this town an attention span that has only grown shorter with the 24 news cycle and insists on instant gratification in the form of instant results or higher poll numbers. When a crisis hits, theres all too often a lurch from shock to trance, ..
Obama's speech, titled "A New Foundation," invoked a biblical parable by saying the nation "cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand."
"We must build our house upon a rock," he said. "We must lay a new foundation for growth and prosperity a foundation that will move us from an era of borrow and spend to one where we save and invest; where we consume less at home and send more exports abroad."

Get ready for 0bummer’s “No Gratification” economy.
WHOSE INSTANT GRATIFICATION?????? Wasn't mine or my husband's. We played by the rules.....and now you're trying to SCREW US.....well....SCREW YOU, you Marxist.
The acting Kenyan acts as if he actually has a clue what he just said. Who wrote the speech he read off the teleprompter?
Who is the Kenyan channeling?
Axelrod?
Borrow and Spend is exactly what he’s doing. He’s borrowing money we can’t pay back, and spending money we really don’t have.

what crap
Much to do about nothing. He gave a speech of empty platitudes.
There are no words. This guy is living in a different universe that I am. Lord have mercy!
Didn’t O-bozo just get done telling us to go out and spend?
Thanks Obama, please pass the $100/lb Wagu beef appetizers
Imagine a privileged affirmative action narcissitic ADHD cokehead lecturing AMERICANS about short attention spans and instant gratification
I highly doubt that Obama will be one to try to change this.
Good grief! Both pretentious AND blasphemous.
Meaning capitalism neglected the hood.
In truth, it was forcing private companies to give houses, credit, and jobs to people who could not handle houses, credit, or a job.
The private sector economy lost in large part because of government interference for social causes.
Kind of like the guy who called on Tony Rezko to secure his (instant gratification) McMansion purchase.
Holy Crap Does this guy think Fairy Tales are going to seriously rebuild the economy when he is flushing trilions down the drain?
ML/NJ
That about sums it up.....
