U.S. Takes a Gamble With Test of Carbon Caps on Car Makers
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 13, 2009 | Stephen Power

The Obama administration is preparing to test whether capping greenhouse gas emissions will push the economy into higher gear, or deeper into a rut. The likely subject of the experiment is the ailing auto industry.

Later this month, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson is expected to declare that carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles endanger health and welfare because of their impact on the climate.

That finding will be a trigger for the EPA to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions under the 1970 Clean Air Act -- independent of any congressional action on broader climate-change measures. A senior administration official familiar with the EPA's plans says the agency will likely confine its rule-making efforts on greenhouse gases this year to autos.

Business groups are sounding the alarm over the prospect of expanded EPA power. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has warned that more than one million businesses involved in manufacturing, operating buildings and services, and farming could eventually become subject to costly new emissions regulations.

...

The EPA is trying to craft new federal emissions standards that would match California's still-to-be-implemented state-level greenhouse-gas standards for vehicles and federal automobile fuel economy regulations now being developed by the Transportation Department. Figuring out how to do this won't be easy, or cheap.

They are "gambling" with the fate of what was the most productive economy in history. Who empowered these destructive nitwits?

This will be the nail in the coffin for the US auto industry. I hope all those union autoworkers who campaigned and voted for Bambi will be happy to see their jobs go to places like India and China.

Gambling infers the possibility of winning... which under hussein's plan is an impossibility.

How about they require auto makers to use “Green” steel in the manufacturing?

You have no respect for strategy. do you? The automakers have nowhere to go but up. So when they do, the greens can say that caps were magic formual.

The impact of this will devistate the transportation industry. (But I’m sure there will be ‘stimulus money’ available for Teamster-operated trucks.)

This will be the greatest economic stimulus we’ve ever seen.

The carmakers will make twice as many vehicles under this plan cuz they will be just half as big. People will need at least two to do the same job as before.

I wonder? If I smash my foot with a sledgehammer, will I be able to run super fast or will I run somewhat slower?

It means deeper debt, higher costs for every product and service delivered, bankruptcy, unemployment, inflation, accelerated destruction of American free enterprise economy and American freedom. Other than that, no biggie. Marxism leads to total destruction.

Tax breaks for purchasers of higher fuel economy cars would make more sense.

It’s going to be interesting to see a post auto-age America. The remaining Big 3 will fail and then our home-grown socialists will attempt to unionize the non-UAW foreign producers. The foreign companies will pull-up stakes and leave not long after. The US Government will next impose huge tariffs on imported autos, just like most of the third world has done. The USA will have an aging and decrepit automobile stock very much like Cuba today and a sharply declining economy and lifestyle to go with it.

Gambling infers the possibility of winning

The speaker implies, the listener infers.

But I take your point, which is, of course, unarguably correct. There is no way capping so-called greenhouse gas emissions can be anything but a burden on the auto industry in particular and the economy as a whole.

They are “gambling” with the fate of what was the most productive economy in history. Who empowered these destructive nitwits?”

Who empowered these nitwits?-—

ACORN—Voters who liked NObama’s color of skin—Losers who have lived most of their lives on some sort of government dole—products of 40+++years of Liberal teachings—people who have never run a business in their lives and never will—trust fund babies—offspring who are still living at home and getting their major support from their parents who are the classic perfection of ENABLER—and many more.

The bulk of the people in the NObama administration have never put up their own capital in their entire lives along with the effort of starting and maintaining a business. They never will. They are marginally employable by the person who did put up their own skills and money.

My brother always said: There isn’t one person in 1000 who is capable of signing the front side of a paycheck...they can all sign the backside.

In today’s atmosphere- I would raise that to 1 in 10,000.
