EDITORIAL: 'We want them registered'--Democrats are going after guns
The Washington Times ^ | April 13, 2009 | Editorial

Posted on 04/13/2009 5:14:23 AM PDT by Scanian

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, announced last week that she wants to register guns. Her next move will be to try to confiscate them.

The speaker picked a television show with a viewership of 4.6 million to float the Democrats' coming gun-control push. Questioned on ABC's "Good Morning America" about the prospect of new gun-control laws now that "it's a Democratic president, a Democratic House," she responded, "We don't want to take their guns away. We want them registered."

Politicians and bureaucrats routinely claim that registration helps solve crimes. If a registered gun is used in a crime and left at the crime scene, registration supposedly lets the police trace the gun back to the criminal. Though this turn of events might work on fictional TV crime shows, it virtually never occurs in real life. Criminals' guns are rarely left at crime scenes. When guns are left behind, it usually is because a crook has been seriously injured or killed and the police are poised to catch him anyway.

The few guns left at crime scenes rarely - if ever - are registered to the perpetrator. If they are registered at all, it is to someone else, whose piece was stolen. Despite what Mrs. Pelosi might think, those who use guns to commit major crimes such as robbing and killing are unlikely to respect her request to file paperwork so the government can catalog the tools of their trade.

Numerous examples disprove gun-control propaganda. Hawaii has had licensing and registration of guns for about 50 years.

just joined the NRA , thanks

these radicals are going to go after so many things which is in violation of this constitution.

from homo marriage to guns, etc, we need to speak out more as the media are helping these left wing wing loons and blacking out news coverage to the public.

For any gun owners to have voted for these buffoons is complete ignorance and no wonder the white house says it is not a bow as many in this country will believe anything they say.

I just went to one of the largest gun shows in America. Wanemacher Gun Show in Oklhoma. While it is true that new guns must be registered, there were plenty of private sales that took place. I purchased a nice .380 handgun without having to go thru the paperwork.

Pelosi, etal, want to regulate this treade giving them a full data base of "all" gun owners. I believe this is the first step towards confiscation.

I refuse to let the government trample my 2nd Amendment rights and will remain active in the NRA's efforts. It was the "framers" intent for its citizens to be armed against an out of control government.

This will provide an easy shopping list for thieves looking for firearms registered to someone else.

Also will provide gun owners with useful "live target" practice...

Guns? Gun registration? What guns? I never had one or would I own any of those dangerous things.

Nor would I. And if anyone tries to enter my dwelling to verify, they'll wind up getting a hot lead injection.

correct one only has to look at how the gaystapo got hold of the signed petitioners who were against them and then they made the names public, then people started getting calls, and visits from them

Pelosi has always demonstrated that dangerous combination of being power-hungry while not being very bright.

Your telling me she isn’t bight. Three or four week ago I saw her on television, twice, saying that 500 million people lose their jobs every month in the US. At that rate in 11 months nobody on earth would have a job. We would all be on welfare.

Oldest trick in the book.

In his book 15 years ago, NRA biggie Wayne LaPierre included a short history of "registration" in two or three U.S. municipalities, and in every case, the city administration, after a few years, went back and attempted to confiscate the registered weapons.

As the Washington Times article demonstrates by logic, the actual LE uses of registration are fairly weak, so that the only real purpose to registration is preparing to confiscate.

For the gun control advocates it's never been about fight crime. It's about scaring, polarizing and misdirection from real troubles they don't want to tackle.

I disagree.

I think it's always been ideological. The purpose is to enforce their conception of the State as Master overshadowing the insignificant individual and his nonexistent rights and pitiful privileges.

It's always about total denial of right, acting out a totalitarian worldview.

I am not surprised that Nancy brings this up.

Her feet are in concrete. The idiots who elect her will keep sending her back. Other democrats however could find themselves looking in from the outside if they join her in this stupid confiscation effort. And it is a confiscation effort, bet on it.

Pelosi has always deomonstrated that dangerous combination of being power-hungry while not being very bright.

While your at it become a life member of the NRA, and also the GOA (Gun Owners of America). They can use the money fighting off the riffraff in congress.

Not true. If you buy from a licensed dealer you must fill out the paperwork. In some states it is still possible to buy from a private party - even at a gunshow - without going through the hoops. THAT is the celebrated “gunshow loophole” we keep hearing about. If gun banners get their way it will make transfers between family members illegal unless the paperwork is done and registered.

I want ALL government employees to be drug and alcohol tested. If they come up positive, FIRE THEM ON THE SPOT!

Register THEM in a database for all to see on the internet.

Guns? Gun registration? What guns? I never had one ....

I used to have several that I filled out forms for, but one day I went salt-water fishing out in the deep-water part of the Gulf of Mexico and I took them all along with me to protect us from sharks, and unfortunately we caught a big roll and they all slid off the foc'sle deck into the water -- rifles, pistols, shotgun and all. Damn!

Water depth out there where we were fishing, out beyond the shelf break, must have been 3000-4000' of water. I'll never do that again!

After that I just didn't have the heart to replace them. You know?

Gun registration will not play well in many parts of the country even in those that have traditionally been Democrat strongholds. It’s hard not to say we told you this would happen when Obama was elected.

This is great news! Now all the criminals will have to register their guns and when they do we will know where they are hiding! I really didn’t think the libs were smart enough to some up with this clever of an idea.
