Feinstein: Not The Time For Gun Control
60 minutes ^ | 9 April, 2009 | NA

Posted on 04/10/2009 6:49:06 AM PDT by marktwain

(CBS) The California senator who authored the nation's now-lapsed 1994 ban on assault weapons says she will hold off trying to renew that ban.

Dianne Feinstein (D.-Calif.) tells 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl that the political timing isn't right and she will move to renew the ban at a future time of her own choosing. Feinstein appears in Stahl's report on the increase in gun sales taking place in America to be broadcast this Sunday, April 12, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Asked by Stahl if trying to renew the assault weapons ban would start a culture war and pose a distraction for an already overburdened Obama Administration, Feinstein replies, "I agree with you." "So you are going to hold off?" asks Stahl. "That's correct. I'll pick the time and the place, no question about it," Feinstein tells Stahl.

But even if she pursued the renewal, the votes may not be there today in either the Senate or the House. Both Houses of Congress gained pro-gun Democrats this past election, some of whom won the support of the National Rifle Association. "I am not going to disagree with that at all," says Feinstein. "The National Rifle Association essentially has a stranglehold on the Congress."

Has Congressional leadership or anyone from the Obama administration influenced her decision to put off the fight for renewal of the assault weapons ban? "No. Nobody said a word to me," Feinstein tells Stahl.

Feinstein appears in Stahl's report on the increase of gun sales in America. Stahl talks to gun enthusiasts who tell her Americans are buying more guns now, in part, due to fear of impending social unrest as a result of the financial meltdown.

Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a pro-guns advocacy group, explains: "We're being told all the time that, ‘The economy could just collapse and we could fall into chaos.’ Well, chaos is a good reason to be able to protect yourself… You could imagine if we truly had a collapse of the economy and it was hard to find food, those that did manage to hang onto food-might…find themselves in a precarious position.'" Van Cleave tells Stahl the other main reason is fear of potential gun control under new President Barack Obama.

All the democrats are doing is trying to figure out how far they can go with gun control and where they can sneak it into without anyone noticing. Suggested is the DC voting rights bill. Feinstein is basically saying if the supreme court had not made that ruling this would have been easier.

It’s ongoing and on the discussion table. We must stay vigilant. If we even think about believing them they will slip it in right under our noses. Meanwhile obama will regulate the h*ll out of ammo and licenses and raise taxes so few can afford guns or ammo.

What she means is that they are just waiting for a sensational tragedy

They already have one. Mexico drug cartel. People are screaming to protect our borders from the murderers. Hillary goes into Mexico and says the guns are coming from the US. And we find out they are not by the way.

She’s blowing it out her arse.

Here’s what she’s really saying: ‘Most of the Democrat congress elected in ‘06 and ‘08 ran on a pro-gun platform because being anti-gun was a loser in center-right to conservative districts. If we get anti-gun now we’ll lose Congress’

The gun issue is the achilles heel, the devil in the details, crack in the dam issue for the Democrats and they know it.

"DiFi must have been looking at gun purchase numbers in California over the last six months and realized an "assualt weapons" ban plus her calling us all racists for opposing the tide of illegal aliens in the State might not add up to re-election."

Very likely stiffling her shot at being Governatress! (But she has an armory in her house in S.F.)

DiFi packs herself, every minute of the day!

It’s the rest of us she wishes to disarm.

“I’ll pick the time and place, no question about it.”

Hopefully, so will the voters of California. (That is, if they are not still hopelessly psychotic and demented.)

IMHO

"It depends on our local/state/Federal law enforcement and military. Will they side with liberty or against it?"

They'll be on the same side as the Nazi concentration camp guards. You know, the ones who where "just following orders".

Is that cynical? Maybe, but I know something about history, and despots can't have their way without the police and/or military. Many on FR revere the police, but I'm not one of them.

I don’t revere them. Where I am from the police are highly politicized and bureaucratized. Not a good sign as this separates them from the people.

On the other hand, I’ve met plenty of people who wouldn’t think twice about shoving me in an oven since I don’t agree with them.

Wonder how the DUmpsters are reacting to this..

They're probably being quiet. They (or at least the intelligent ones amongst them) know that gun control helped cost them the Congress in 1994 and ushered in 12 years of GOP control, then a two-term GOP White House.

They'll be pragmatic about it. They'll get gun control at the tail end of their progressive revolution, once they've locked in control of everything else and no one will be strong enough to oppose them.

But make no mistakes about it, gun control far beyond anything done in the early 1990s IS coming.

The only reason statements like this are made is to disarm the opposition, the political uninformed.

Yep, misinformation is the name of this game. This way, she (and the rest of them) can look so much more honorable & "compassionate" when the inevitable "massacre" happens.
