Nah, it’s a little too close to real life for me.

Yes, they are supposed to use blanks, and at respectable, well-organized re-enactments there are usually intense weapons inspections before each and every battle scenario, complete with accountability paperwork, just to prevent things like this from happening.
Unfortunately, some reenactors feel the need to do actual target shooting with their weapons in the off-season, and in cases like this, leave a live round in the chamber, forget about it, and then bring it to the event loaded, only to use it and accidentally hurt someone when the inspections are not properly done. Totally stupid.

The guy was shot with a replica .44 cap and ball pistol.

Change the barrel and the cylinder, and it can be anything you want it to be.
Personally all my black powder weapons are 45 caliber, so that I have no problem loading a 50 into a 45 or a 45 into a 44.

Did
South of Shiloh happen to be the name of the book? The author spent a good amount of time here researching the locations and spending time with reenactors to get much of it right.
I live between Shiloh and Corinth and it was like reading a local story.
I have a Civil War Sniper's rifle that shoots a hexagonal .45 bullet.

Confederate. It figures. The Confederate units were never known for strict guidelines when it came to safety or organization.
As far as the media reporting what was used, that will have to come later when someone who knows what they’re talking about reports back.

Sounds familiar ... could have been. My dad had me read a book about sniping .... how it started and the whole history of it up to Vietnam ... then I read “Point of Impact” ...very good book.

What REALLY sucked was that they took him to a reenacted field hospital and sawed his arm off without anesthesia. Actually that's a myth, the vast majority of civil war operations had some form of anesthesia,be it chloroform or the use of morphine, this led to the US,s first drug epidemic since the effects and dosages were not well understood
there actually was a name for this "old soldiers disease"
