The area off the coast of Somalia and Kenya when combined with the waters of the Gulf of Aden equals more than 1.1 million square miles, roughly four times the size of Texas or the size of the Mediterranean and Red Seas combined. In a region this large, merchant mariners must often serve as the first line defenders against pirates because naval forces will likely not be close enough to respond.

Another thought. It has almost always been the case that if Americans outside of this country that were caught in a sticky situation, the US would either rescue them or work for their release. What I take from this incident is that if you are an American citizen overseas and you get in a jam, you are s o l. obambi will leave you to swing in the wind. I can understand he might not want to comment on ongoing events, as the situation might still be delicate, but to say he wants to talk about housing is a poor response. It certainly gives the appearance the situation is of no concern to him.

The Administration will probably come up with a new plan that will include dismissing the word “pirates” and changing it to “unsavory characters of the sea”. That should solve this problem.
