WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A federal judge Tuesday set aside the conviction of former Sen. Ted Stevens.

The judge also initiated criminal contempt proceedings against the government lawyers who prosecuted the 85-year-old Alaska Republican.

He appointed an independent, nongovernment attorney, Henry Schuelke III, to investigate possible prosecutorial misconduct.

I am no Delay admirer, and have no personal knowledge of that case, but if he was such a crook, why didn’t the DA in Sugarland indict him?

Texas law if that matters to you. I think it should be changed and given to the State Attorney General’s office and take it away from the local DA.

We have been told over and over again on FR that Stevens was a crook. Is he, or isn't he?

This sounds like a travesty.

The Republicans threw him overboard. They threw him overboard here on FR, too.

File this one next to all the illegal campaign funds that got Democrats into office, only to be returned as tainted AFTER the elections are over.

In my opinion, no.

And the more I read from case filings, trial transcripts, history of the prosecutors, etc.,
it only reinforces my opinion.

Did FR and the Republicans throw him overboard?... Must be some reason if they did so. Any ideas as to what those reasons may have been?

Too bad he can't get his reputation back!

Read this AP story, that was filed before today's proceedings, and you will understand why you didn't know what was going on. Pure editorial.

No. At this point, I'm totally confused. I heard Rush say Rs abandoned him. Rs always do. RATS never do that.

I'm in favor of it if the person is guilty but there is a great amount of indecision in this one. Most Freepers were against him. I had no opinion on it as I don't know but now, who knows.

The players in this are curious as well. I do know there were Clinton holdovers in the Bush judiciary. Next time a Republican gets a shot at this (if it ever happens again) they need to do a total disinfection of the State Dept. and Judiciary.

The rats have been after Stevens for years.

Aided by the Anchorage/McClatchy Daily News and KTUU channel 2 and with intense pressure from national environmental organizations the anti-Stevens noise has been intense. Every time there is a slow news day they would find someone here that has benefited from something the Senator did and spin it to give it a tinge of corruption.

The press, private investigators and government (Democratic) hacks have torn his life apart for years trying to get "something" on him. (Junior version of the attack job on Gov. Palin) He was tried on what little evidence that they could find and now we find that they had to lie to even get that to stick.

Stevens was respected, but not well liked by a lot of RINO republicans, most notably, John McCain who he fought with for years about ANWR. I am not surprised at all that many republicans threw him under the bus.

Surely you jest. The RINO-led GOP is owned lock, stock and barrel by the demrats.

Thanks for the clarification. If this guy has truly been railroaded, this is a travesty, not to mention they’ve stolen another senate seat. RATS will do anything to win.

A lot of stuff happened under the Bush justice department because Clinton staffed it with his people before he left office.

“WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS? They should be screaming about this!”

Heck, in Virginia, the Republicans did the same thing!!!! Why would they complain??? I forget the district but the conservative, Mark Tate had BS felony charges brought up against him so that the freaking liberal could win the primary unopposed. People like Jim Rich, Frank Wolf, Common Wealth Attorney of Loudoun County (forget his name) and a few others were behind it because they knew the woman running couldn’t beat him fairly.

I’m glad that there is an honest judge who is willing to throw the book at corrupt Government. It’s about damn time.

Mike
