Kenya: Double tax to curb recession
Africa News ^ | 3/24/09 | Jerry Nguwa

Kenyans are to be heavily taxed as part of government moves to absorb the shocks of the global financial crisis. The government has also decided to seriously reduce its national expenditure.

AfricaNews correspondent said under the new tax regime even unemployed Kenyans are to pay tax. However, the call for taxing Members of Parliament hit a dead end last week when they asked that their salaries be increased before being taxed.

Another strategy being used by the government is the raising of the tax rate on second hand clothes commonly known as “mitumba.” Our correspondent said it is the easiest way to ensure that “even people on informal employment are taxed to maximize government revenues.”

Meanwhile, prices of food and basic commodities are escalating and the ordinary citizens are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

Taxing for prosperity is like binge-drinking for sobriety.

Man, are we going to have a hangover pretty soon!

Man, don’t let Obama read this. He will take this as proof that he is on the right track.

The utter hypocrisy amazes me.

Well, clearly the people aren’t spending their money “right”, so it’s necessary for the government to take it from them and do the job properly. ;)

Collectivists always exclude the “elites” from the rules that have to be imposed on everyone else in order to reach the final solution. The elites must be unencumbered, lest such encumbrance slow the progress of implementing the solution.
