U.S. F-16 fighter jets are tracking a single-engine plane over Missouri that was stolen from a Thunder Bay, Ont., aviation school Monday afternoon.
Lt.-Cmdr. Gary Ross of NORAD in Colorado told CTV Newsnet that as of about 9 p.m. the plane was about 50 kilometres east of Salem.
"We remain in pursuit and are trying to encourage the pilot to land safely," he said.
Ross said the pilot has not responded to radio calls from the F-16s or the FAA and that the stolen Cessna 172 only has about one hour of fuel left.
He also said the pilot has refused to acknowledge the nonverbal communications from the F-16 jets to follow them.

"And of course they already know it isnt a terrorist...right? This administration no longer recognizes the word "terrorist". Now, people are "disenfranchised creators of man-made catastrophes". Sure, it's not as catchy as terrorist, but it shows we're finally compassionate and empathetic towards the plight of the misunderstood militant Islamist.

Why use an F-16 for this long to track a single-engine private aircraft? Any number of aircraft are cheaper to operate, and suited to the mission than an F-16. If it comes down to a battle of remaining fuel the 172 will win this one, hands down. We had a 172 stolen from a flight school here in the Tampa Bay Area six or seven years ago, being flown by a teen age boy who eventually crashed it into one of the tallest buildings in downtown Tampa. It was a miracle crash, no other word describes it. There was fuel all over the place and draining down inside the walls, yet there was no fire. A single spark or open flame would have set it off, but there was simply no ignition, nothing short of a miracle. The kid has buzzed the flight line at MacDill AFB, home of Central Command and a wing of KC-135’s before being picked up by a Coast Guard helicopter that was right behind him when he hit the building. He had left a note saying he was sympathetic to those who had brought down the Twin Towers. He had also been on antidepressants and his mother was suing the company that marketed the medication as well as the doc who had put him on it.
