I have been watching an interesting phenomenon on the right, which is beginning to cause me concern. I am referring to the over-the-top hysteria in response to the first months in office of our new president, which distinctly reminds me of the "Bush is Hitler" crowd on the left.
Conservatives, please. Let's not duplicate the manias of the left as we figure out how to deal with President Obama. He is not exactly the antichrist, although a disturbing number of people on the right are convinced he is.
I have recently received commentaries that claim that "Obama's speeches are unlike any political speech we have heard in American history" and "never has a politician in this land had such a quasi-religious impact on so many people" and "Obama is a narcissist," which leads the author to then compare Obama to David Koresh, Charles Manson, Joseph Stalin and Saddam Hussein. Excuse me while I blow my nose.
This fellow has failed to notice that all politicians are narcissists. So what? Political egos are one of the reasons the Founders put checks and balances on executive power. As for serial lying, is there a politician that cannot be accused of that? And once, a recent president set a pretty high bar in this category, and we survived it. As for Obama's speeches, they are hardly in the Huey Long, Louis Farrakhan, Fidel Castro vein. They are in fact eloquently and cleverly centrist and sober.
So what's the panic? It is true that Obama has shown surprising ineptitude in his first months in office, but he's not a zero with no accomplishments, as many conservatives seem to think -- unless you regard beating the Clinton machine and winning the presidency as nothing. But in doing this, you fall into the "Bush-is-an-idiot" bag of liberal miasmas.
It is also true Obama has ceded his domestic economic agenda to the House Democrats and spent a lot of money in the process. But what's the surprise in this? After all, George W. Bush and John McCain both proposed (and in Bush's case pushed through) massive government giveaways (which amount to government takeovers as well). This is bad, but it doesn't make Obama a closet Mussolini, however deplorable the conservatives among us may regard it. Moreover, he has run into political resistance even within his own party. Charlie Rangel has made it clear that the itemized deduction tax hike is not going through his committee -- and that should tell you the American system is still in place.
Even as astute a conservative thinker as Mark Steyn has been swept up in the tide that thinks Obama is a "transformative" radical. But look again at his approach to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In both cases, he is carrying out the Bush policies -- the same that he once joined his fellow Democrats in condemning. And that should be reassuring to anyone concerned about where he is heading as commander in chief.
In other words, while it's reasonable to be unhappy with a Democratic administration and even concerned because the Democrats are now a socialist party in the European sense, we are not witnessing the coming of the antichrist. A good strategy for political conflicts is to understand your opponent first -- not to underestimate him, but not to overestimate him, either.
As we move forward, Obama faces increasingly tough choices in the wars against Islamic fascism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Gaza and Iran. Hopefully, he will make the right choices, and should he do so, conservatives will need to be there to support him. If he makes the wrong choices, conservatives will need to be there to oppose him. But neither our support nor our opposition should be based on hysterical responses to policies that we just don't like. Let's leave that kind of behavior to the liberals who invented it.
Ok, I agree, but Obama is OFF THE CHARTS on this scale!
Obama is also the MOST polarizing politician in history. That some Democrats in Congress think Obama is wrong on a few things does NOT make Obama any “better” -— the fact that Democrats are resisting Obama-nation, for now, on some issues, only makes Obama a bit less dangerous!
“And David Horowitz is not helping the cause one bit.”
that is a completely wrong and untrue statement. His frontpagemag.com is one of the foremost conservative magazines. He also goes into lib universities and makes speeches where his very life is threatened to unmask the indoctrination. Let’s not throw him overboard because he writes one article that is less strident than what we like to read.
If you actually know all the good work Horowitz does, you would support him financially and in every other way, we need more like him.
Highly unlikely.
The real issue is that too much effort is being done to pacify those that have the solutions, a lot of money and influence has been planned and built up to safeguard the plan of destruction to the USA.
Every day, every minute there is a constant effort to profile, label, identify, an harass the legitimate forces that wish for the original way of America to return, starting with Sarah Palin.
An overwhelming mass of misguided American weaklings still prefer to kneel than stand, prefer the believe that EASY is the right thing to do, believe that life must be a superhighway and all they need to do is push a CRUISE button once a day to live and thrive.
Life is NOT simple, only the strong succeed, its natures way of guaranteeing the future of a species.
A weak America will die, it will cease to exist in the future generations, we must remove the problem that is weakening America, we must remove the splinter that is creating the blood poisoning.
For if we do not we will die. America was never meant to kneel before an emperor.
Maybe Horowitz is trying to get on The View also.
How can I take this guy seriously when he is talking about issues that Mr. Obama denies are issues. Has he (Pres Obama) not said that we are not at war with Islam? Yet, somehow, 99% of the attacks on out nation and our people are Islamic...
I somewhat see what you mean.
I was commenting to someone yesterday that when I go up to someone who isn’t as informed as us, they would think I was kookoo for all the things that are legitimately true, but sound outrageous.
Baby steps.
Open your eyes, David. Consider the FACTS. Pay attention.
Bush never resembled Hitler except in the minds of ideological fanatics.
Regretably, Obama does. He is a Muslim. He is a Communist. And, the odds now are about 99-1, he is NOT an American. He hates America, and it clearly shows.
For starters, how about watching this video, taken mostly from BBC News clips, if you think his association with and identification with Communist/Muslim terrorists is merely theoretical.

You could have spoken of legitimate policy concerns about this administration, instead you reach for a rhetorical nuke; it is a sign of bankruptcy, zero judgment, no proportion, no patriotism, and blind stupidity. Got it yet?
I can say as a conservative, that I started getting a feeling of a large object being lodged in my throat - about a year or two after George W. Bush was re-elected. My sixth sense was telling me that “the fix was in”. From that point on - watching Bush do nothing to protect our borders, watching the Republicans spend money like Democrats, watching the expansion of social programs, watching John McCain become our candidate - and watching the hastily choreographed financial crisis last fall days after McCain started rising in the polls (thanks to Sarah Palin), watching the media put Obama in office & no Republican “leadership” calling them out on it AND watching both the media and the GOP trying to crucify Sarah Palin since then - FROM THAT POINT ON - I have become convinced of it!
Conservatives are currently being demeaned and sidelined by BOTH parties!!! I have never seen things so clearly as I do now. We had better be “hysterical” and do something soon or kiss the United States of America goodbye!
He’s a marxist. Ineptitude means nothing when you have marxists controlling both houses of congress as well.
Just on his military slashing alone, he is more dangerous than any president, ever.
Is it even possible to exaggerate the slobbering love affair and zombified devotion to Obama?
I don't think this is the time to run that liberal meme about him just being a moderate reformer and pragmatic realist.
In the Primary Election, Obama ran against Hillary, who had the highest negatives of any politician, ever, in a Presidential Primary.
No. I am not about to be calm about taxes, irresponsible spending, incompetent decisions, and policies that danger the future of this country.
I expected typical tax and spend from this yahoo stuffed shirt. I didn’t expect it to be socialism on steriods.
I would be well pleased to see GOP leaders grow a pair and start acting like they give a damn.
“Horowitz is an agnostic.”
It Greek, from which the term is derived, it literally means “not knowing or I don’t know.” Of course, this is in reference to God. However, in his case it is safe to extrapolate his lack of knowledge to other matters. This fellow is clueless.
Thanks. My wife called her handsome the other day too.
I just backed out of a Tea Party because it is being attended by quite a few black helicopter folks. People on the right who talk on the deep end will never turn anyone around. I do believe that this is where Mr. Horowitz is coming from . I’m not a moderate but I don’t suffer loons either.
Oh, yes, by all means, let’s not get excited. After all, the hysterical rants of the left have made sure to put their party in the minority in both houses of Congress, and has kept their candidate out of the White House... Oh, wait,... nevermind...
Mmm-hmmm.
George Bush thought the best way to deal with democrats was calmly and respectfully.
Look where that got us.
