CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- A mother shot and killed her son, and then herself, inside a Casselberry Gun Range Sunday afternoon, according to police.
When Casselberry police arrived at the Shoot Straight Gun Range on South U.S. Highway 17-92 (see map) just after 4:00pm, they found two people had been shot in an apparent murder-suicide.
Police identified the man as 20-year-old Mitchel Moore. The shooter, his mother, was identified as 44-year-old Marie Moore.
Eyewitnesses said the pair was acting strangely and then the woman ran out of the room to get more ammunition. When she returned, eyewitnesses said, she shot her son and then turned the gun on herself.
Eyewitness Jim Copertino was in shooting target practice next to the pair and said the mother and son appeared hyper and jittery, as if they were on drugs.
"I noticed both of them were very anxious with each other. She kept getting very close to him and he was firing. She was almost over his shoulder," Copertino recalled. "She ran out to get more ammo, ran back in and then both were down."

I just wonder if the kid really wanted to be there. I wonder if he knew what his mother had in mind.
The woman had a history of mental illness.
Poor Jim will probably second guess himself for the rest of his life wishing he would have done something. He knew something was up with those two.
Are statistics like this collected somewhere? Owners of ranges might want to collect them to defend themselves as to ranges’ safety. Gun-control forces might use incidents like these to argue that the ranges themselves are somehow encouraging violence against oneself or others.
Having some statistics showing the overall safety of ranges, and the tiny proportion of things like this as oppossed to safe-shooting “incidents”, would help.
The thing about a suicide like this is that they are so visibly connected - the gun to the death. There may be thousands of people that commit suicide each year by driving into bridge abutments, but how would we know? Those suicides will be attributed to the driver dozing off, or just some inexplicable malfunction.
Oboma has no idea how to lead, and it's got people on the edge. He was suppose to "heal" everything that was wrong in their world (according to those running his campaign), but now people are seeing him as a typical lying politician hell bent on setting his own self glorifying agenda.
The "hope" fix he gave them is wearing off. Oboma, a man with nothing hut community organizing as his only skill, has let his faithful congregation down. They just cannot wait any longer for the "change" they know isn't coming. They know, in fact, Oboma has made the globe a hundred times worse off then when he started less than 100 days ago.
The Oboma mania was just an illusion. It gave millions of people - for the first time in their miserable lives - something to live for. Now that it's gone, there's nothing left but something to die for.
Mitchell Moore, who also lived in Altamonte Springs but at a different address than his mother, was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics transported his mother to Florida Hospital-Altamonte, where she died, Stewart said.
Marie Moore had a history of mental illness, Stewart said, but he had no details.
Possibly a drug abuse-triggered relapse, like with Phil Hartman's wife.
Yeah, you do the dance when you get hot brass that goes down your shirt.
I used that range just a month or two ago as I was passing through that part of the world. You’re right, it’s tight quarters in there.
Join a gun club. You can rest assured that most gun clubs check their perspective members out fairly well. And since all the members are gun owners, you can assume that no ones is going to come in to just commit suicide on the range. They can do that at home. I went shooting just yesterday and for a large portion of the time, it was just me and my two friends there. Much better than a public range.
Terrible times, who can anyone blame?
We live in insane times.
Well no kidding...The Mother blew away her son for God sake.
And if she was this mentally twisted, what would the 20 year old being doing with her at a freaking shooting range?
She seems to have a lot of male friends.
I think Americans have had so much Islamic crap shoved down their throats they are now believing that they will be getting their 72 virgins by committing an act act of suicide.
Some cultures were never meant to be homogenized together equally, only one can rule.
I hear brass catchers are kind of a pain, but getting hit in the face repeatedly by spent brass from the left takes most of the fun out of the range for me, even though I do wear great big wrap around safety glasses, earmuffs and a hoodie.
It must be a “chick” thing. : )
If the woman stepped in front of a City Transit Bus, I would say we ban Public Transportation.
That is why I love Liberal arguments to ban things for our own good. We can ban everything, but people will still figure out ways to kill themselves.
We could ban buildings over one story high, ban bridges, ban knives and even ban the ocean. Human Ingenuity will always succeed.
I talked to one of the guys who worked at a gun store that had a range and he said it happens more than people realize. They almost always rent a gun. He said if you are ever at the range and you see it happening do not do anything. Do not try to stop them.
I get too creeped out at ranges anymore and will avoid places where the range rents guns.
I really think all the attention that is put onto these murder-suicides is encourageing sick individuals to get their moment in the spotlight.
This will be spun as a gun control thing, but that isn’t even the issue here - there have been gun control laws overturned or implaced so the guns were there to start with.
The railroad in my small town was the method of choice of the drug addled kids of the 70s.
Good suggestion about a club. I get creeped out when you sometimes have 1911 cowboy guys/Clint Wannabes who are not as careful as they should be. Gun safety is the most important thing.
Not me, if I see someone at the range trying to kill themselves, the first thing I'll do is say, "Stop, or I'll shoot".
