Washington, DC (AHN) - An FBI program that investigates unsolved killings along highways has linked long-haul truck drivers with hundreds of murders across the country, the Los Angeles Times reported over the weekend.
The Highway Serial Killings Initiative (HSKI) has solved more than two dozen killings since it started five years ago, authorities said, according got the Times.
At the center of HSKI's operation is a database holding information on more than 500 female murder victims, whose bodies were discarded at or near truck stops, motels and other places along well-traveled truck routes nationwide.
The database also has information on truckers, who have been charged with violent crimes against women or are suspects in those crimes.
The FBI did not say whether truck driving was an occupation that serial killers typically go into, but it did say the free and mobile lifestyle many truckers lead could be ideal for someone apt to kill, according to the Times.
Michael Harrigan, the agent in charge of the HSKI, told the newspaper that women shouldn't panic every time they fill up for gas at a truck, since most of the victims in the database lead risky lifestyles.
"Many of these victims made poor choices, but that doesn't mean they deserved to die," Harrigan told the Times.
500 possible victims?????
My mother was a truck driver for years. It’s the perfect job for a serial killer.
LOL! I have a girlfriend who drove truck after her divorce. She made a ton of cash, and took her kids with her to see the USA.
I saw a documentary about five or ten years ago, where the FBI speculated that there were about 35 active serial killers in the US, and 30 of them were thought to be truckers.
Recent arrests in the midwest have born this out.
And it only took them FIVE YEARS and a hundred million tax dollars in FBI overtime to figure this out! ;)
Now, if they could figure out who is killing young college men and dumping their bodies in rivers....
One of my first thoughts, too.
Gee-Whiz, Wally! There’s a major Interstate Highway running north and south all along the Mississippi River route where all those young men have been killed. Who knew?
Nope. Nothing to see here. Move along! Grrrrrrr!
It’s the truck stop food that makes them do this
and also east-west along the eastern coast and Colorado areas where others have been killed an dumped
500 backlogged murders and they just started the special unit 5 years ago??? The FBI is a little slow on the up take.
Give the FBI a break.
They’re in WV and are busy compiling a database of which salad dressing you bought last week.
“according got the Times.”
Their proof reader must have been one of the victims!
Unfortunately there are a lot of people who make themselves available as victims. Hookers, drifters, runaways etc.
A truck driver who picks up anyone for any reason is a fool at best.
I fooled them. I don’t buy salad dressing, so they’ll have to fall back on the “how many cans of cat food” data base.
Truckers Ping...
There was a story in the nineties that stated there were 43 serial killers using the interstate as a hunting ground. There may n]have been more but the FBI had identified that number of distinctly seperate by MO multiple murders.
