The only reason any of the spouses is even there is to give the media and the public something to talk about. None of them is going to make the slightest useful contribution to the economic summit. Most (or all) of the heads-of-state won’t, either, but we’ve got to pretend to take them seriously.
Some of the women are decorative (Carla Sarkozy), some are comic relief (Michelle Obama), and some (Mrs. Brown) are the hostess and would probably rather be anywhere else.
