Obama takes step over the line that separates government from private industry

His automaker bailout plan wades into 'industrial policy,' in which government officials, not business executives or the free market, decide what products a firm makes and how it charts its future.

President Obama's plan to save failing U.S. automakers -- and make them the instruments for creating a cleaner, greener transportation system -- marked a major step across the line that traditionally separates government from private industry.

His announcement Monday of a new position on bailing out Detroit went beyond a desire to be sure tax dollars were not wasted in bailing out struggling companies. It put the Obama administration squarely in the position of adopting a so-called industrial policy, in which government officials, not business executives or the free market, decided what kinds of products a company would make and how it would chart its future.

“the Obama administration squarely in the position of adopting a so-called industrial policy, in which government officials, not business executives or the free market, decided what kinds of products a company would make and how it would chart its future.”

I hope that all the ignorant people who voted for him REMEMBER (in the future) that it was he who trashed this nation.

I think what would be perfect at this moment...

A popular appeal to GM, “Just say no to O.”

I think his handlers are going to use him to push their agenda as far as they can and he will take the fall when the sh!t hits the fan.
I don’t think he has a clue.

Here's a peculiar little snippet from the article...

Some participants in the deliberations, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of White House restrictions on allowing people to speak freely...

Any hint of a clue he has came from his mother and all of the radicals he has spent most of his life with. And none of it’s good....

 From the LAT article:

"We inherited a really difficult situation, and so in that context are focused on the best options consistent with the president's goal of supporting the auto industry and being good stewards of taxpayer resources," said one senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity despite conveying official White House talking points....."

"Some participants in the deliberations, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of White House restrictions on allowing people to speak freely, said the task force operated from an underlying belief that consumers would ultimately be attracted to more fuel-efficient cars despite current data showing many such cars languishing on dealer lots...."

I think he took a step over the line within the first week of his administration. I’d say he’s already gotten a “first down” as far as “nationalizing” our economy...

Expect the energy industry to be next — or perhaps media. I guess it remains to be seen how long the media stays on his side. I would guess their position on the list fluctuates depending on how much deference they show Obama.

What about the separation of corporate and state?

Although not quite specific to this set of circumstances since it deals with outright government seizure, there is the SCOTUS decision Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer, 343 U.S. 579 (1952) which "limited the power of the President of the United States to seize private property in the absence of either specifically enumerated authority under Article Two of the United States Constitution or statutory authority conferred on him by Congress.".

Obama’s agenda: Decimate the American auto industry, throwing millions out of work, while at the same time continue to give billions in tax funds for the mega-bankers, who bankrolled him into office.

Just another march step in the growth of the socialist/fascist state once known as the beacon of individual freedom.

How far does the pendulum swing before the people wake up and reclaim their rights?

I guess it remains to be seen how long the media stays on his side. I would guess their position on the list fluctuates depending on how much deference they show Obama.

There's some grumbling starting to come from Congressional Dems, worried about the midterm elections.

From Bloomberg:

“The bloom is off the rose as far as Obama-mania is concerned,” [FL Dem Rep Alcee] Hastings said. “People are beginning to ask the hard question, and that is, ‘when is there going to be some improvement that is going to affect me?’”

and

"The potential for a political backlash will hinge in part on whether Obama and his economic team can keep the public’s confidence in his stewardship of the economy, said Representative Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat. He said that was damaged this month by public outrage over the bonuses paid to employees at American International Group Inc...."

What's interesting is that Cummings thinks the AIG flak hurt Obama.

It put the Obama administration squarely in the position of adopting a so-called industrial policy, in which government officials, not business executives or the free market, decided what kinds of products a company would make and how it would chart its future.

Why worry? Obama has as much experience running a car company as he has in all other productive work combined. His qualifications to run GM are as strong as his qualifications to lead the country.
