Gang Recruit Effort Alleged At Middle School in Va. [Tony Fairfax County]

Efforts by a street gang to recruit Fairfax County youths have led to the arrests of seven Chantilly area teenagers, ages 13 and 16...

...this time, the Latino gang Sur 13, with roots tracing to a notorious Mexican prison gang in Southern California, tried to pick up more members at Franklin Middle School, just off Centreville Road in western Fairfax County, court records state.

A student at Franklin reported to the school resource officer that a student approached him during lunch period and asked him to join his gang, according to an affidavit for a search of the alleged gang leader's home in Chantilly. When the student refused, the leader told him not to mention the recruitment to anyone, the affidavit stated.

A second student also reported that he had been approached by the same person while at Franklin and was told that he could either get "jumped in" -- in which a 13-second beating is inflicted as a gang initiation rite -- or do "missions" to earn his membership. Sgt. William Fulton, who supervises school resource officers in western Fairfax, said missions could range from burglarizing cars to stealing cars to destroying property or spray-painting gang signs, known as "tagging."

The second student also told police that he felt intimidated, and his fear led him to participate in the "jumping in" of a Chantilly High School student... The second student said he was taught hand signs that the officer recognized as being from the Sur 13 gang, and the student was told to wear blue clothing at school and at home.

Another student said that he participated in a "jump in" by recording it on his cellphone ... and police later watched that video. ...

I wish we could declare war on gangs. Gangs such as this MS-13 gang are bringing disorder to many of our cities.

These gangs are fighting an actual war in Mexico over the drug trade. Pieces of that war are fought in our cities too.

Why can’t we handle these gangs as a war issue, not a criminal justice issue where we have to read their Miranda rights, etc. ????

If you look at big portions of our major cities, you can see that these gangs have declared war on civilized society.

Sadly, Gang Violence has its roots in communities that have a majority of households run by unwed single mothers. When there isn't a father figure in authority to reign in and supervise these kids, the first place they turn is to a Gang Leader who is a poor substitute for a dad. I'm not saying this to broad brush or attack all single mothers, but it does seem to be the case most of the time.

Is this the wonderful “socialization” that homeschoolers are missing? ( Just wondering.)

There are schools soooooooo **horrifically** awful that it would be better for a child to NEVER attend!....Not even for five minutes! It would be better for that child to be completely illiterate and innumerate rather than step foot in these schools. ( Yes, I am completely serious!)

This school appears to be one of those schools.

Also.....If an adult would object to being subjected to, and works to avoid, an environment where gangs are openly recruiting, why would we **force** a CHILD to put up with these horrible social conditions? There is only two words that are appropriate here: CHILD ABUSE!

Children are **forced** to put up with government imposed environments that in the private work force would win an adult MILLIONS!

“I’m not saying this to broad brush or attack all single mothers”

... no. You are just saying it because it is TRUE.
Funny how we have to sugar-coat reality these days, as if the self-esteem of single moms is more important than safe communities or kids staying out of jail.

Horrible schools like this is ANOTHER VITAL REASON FOR SCHOOL CHOICE. Vouchers, charter schools, whatever it takes to rescue kids from these places.

You are right. If it was a pedophile, we’d move heaven and earth to keep kids away. But a dangerous school!?!? Nah, let the kids suffer!

No doubt. What's scary is that AFAIK, Chantilly VA is precisely the opposite of that sort of community. I'm under the impression that it is (or was) a really nice place.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

It’s not an attack on single mothers. It’s too bad that some perceive it that way. It’s merely a fact of life.

Honestly we are talking about a foreign insurgency (look how bad Mexico is doing) operating within the United States to fund a war in a neighboring nation. This is as important as the WOT...

The week before last it was Loudon County. We purposely chose one of the best school districts in Prince William Co, even though we homeschool, for resale as well as on the hope that the local kids would not be thugs. We are lucky, the kids (and even the teens) here are wonderful...but drive a few miles outside of our community and it’s all different.

And in further news gang members across the US are being rounded up and forced into serving Obamas elite patriotic corps. With promises of modern automatic weapons, body armor and heavy motorized equipment the volunteers are rushing to join.

Its not a job, its an adventure!
