“In a memo e-mailed this week to Pentagon staff members, the Defense Department’s office of security review noted that “this administration prefers to avoid using the term ‘Long War’ or ‘Global War on Terror’ [GWOT.] Please use ‘Overseas Contingency Operation.’” — WaPo, March 25, 2009 [emphasis added]
Maybe there is something to Pres. Obama’s post-partisan goal. He seems to have created virtual non-partisan unanimity around the fact that his new term for the war on terror is . . . silly. The crew at Fox News Watch had fun this evening with the absurd new term: “Overseas Contingency Operation.” Just how bad is the neo-logism? Bad enough that one panelist predicted that not even MSNBC would go along with it

I laughed when I first saw that phrase, “Overseas Contingency Operation.” But the trouble is, I just can’t get myself to remember it. It lacks that certain ring. When I wanted to tell someone what Obama’s new term for the War on Terror was, I had to go back to the article on FR and look it up, because it just wouldn’t stick in my mind.
It still won’t. For one thing, what is “contingency” supposed to mean? Orwellian duckspeak is should disguise or change the meaning of words, not to signify nothing at all.
You can run it up the flagpole, but no one will salute it.
