Boiling Mad: Crabs Feel Pain
YahooNews ^ | 03/27/09 | Robert Roy Britt

A favored method of preparing fresh crabs is to simply boil them alive. A longstanding related question: Do they feel pain? Yes, researchers now say. Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate). The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans. The study involved using wires to deliver shocks to the bellies of hermit crabs, which, being hermits, often take up residence in left-behind mollusc shells. The crabs that were shocked scampered out of their shells, "indicating that the experience is unpleasant for them," the scientists concluded; unshocked crabs stayed put. Another test was run to see what would happen if a mild shock was delivered, one just below the threshold that would cause the crabs to leave home. These mildly shocked crabs, along with crabs that had not been shocked, were then offered a new home. The typical reaction: They'd go inspect the new shell. Significantly, those that had been shocked were more likely to pack up and move to the new residence compared to those that hadn't been shocked. "There has been a long debate about whether crustaceans including crabs, prawns and lobsters feel pain," said study researcher Bob Elwood of Queen's University Belfast in the UK.

As for me, I only eat Jihaddi crustaceans. Those little buggers are only too happy to die, most time they throw themselves into the pot in an attempt to splash you with the scalding water.

I know of some restaurants that will put them in their walk-in freezers. They stay alive a day or two.

They’re food. I don’t care what they feel. We all have pain. If I were food, it would hurt me, too, but that would be that.

Cause everybody hurts....sometimes.

“Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.”

Very Buddhist of you, though I’m not sure I agree. Life has episodic pain, but equating life to pain...

Can it be anymore painful that being torn apart limb from limb or devoured alive by the natural predators of crabs like gulls, squid, larger crabs, and octopi? I doubt many crabs die of old age. They almost all end up in the belly of another animal.

Solent Green was one of the best movies ever. To bad there aren’t more people who have seen it.

Around here, the crab fisherman's custom is to back the crabs live and then drop them into boiling water. (Shush, don't tell PETA!)

Probably done out of the necessity of fitting a crab in the boats tea kettle, but many of us landlubbers do the same as, supposedly, it tastes better.

Heh...I think I saw that one in the original...

But, it’s just a show. B&W. Not real. Fiction.

I’m safe.

The pain of being boiled alive is far worse than anything you're ever likely to experience. I take the little bit of trouble to kill a lobster before boiling it - it's not hard, and it spares the animal some suffering. There's no reason to torment an animal needlessly.
