Boiling Mad: Crabs Feel Pain
YahooNews ^ | 03/27/09 | Robert Roy Britt

A favored method of preparing fresh crabs is to simply boil them alive. A longstanding related question: Do they feel pain? Yes, researchers now say. Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate). The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans. The study involved using wires to deliver shocks to the bellies of hermit crabs, which, being hermits, often take up residence in left-behind mollusc shells. The crabs that were shocked scampered out of their shells, "indicating that the experience is unpleasant for them," the scientists concluded; unshocked crabs stayed put. Another test was run to see what would happen if a mild shock was delivered, one just below the threshold that would cause the crabs to leave home. These mildly shocked crabs, along with crabs that had not been shocked, were then offered a new home. The typical reaction: They'd go inspect the new shell. Significantly, those that had been shocked were more likely to pack up and move to the new residence compared to those that hadn't been shocked. "There has been a long debate about whether crustaceans including crabs, prawns and lobsters feel pain," said study researcher Bob Elwood of Queen's University Belfast in the UK.

There is always salt and non-organic synthetic food, so that no living creature suffers!

Could we get the same respect for the unborn? This reminds me of that retard Keith Olberman going off on the Sarah Palin turkey slaughter incident. He was so concerned about the suffering of the poor widdle birds, but is all for partial birth abortions. Idiots!

I have fond memories of boiling shrimp and crabs as a child with my family along the Georgia coast....
All you can catch and all you can eat back then.

I love lobster (and in fact all crustaceans!) and on occasion we get a live one and cook it. I will admit that I don’t like the idea of boiling them alive, so my husband dispatches them with a knife (not sure exactly where he pierces them) before we do it. It probably still hurts (I’m sure they feel something, they do have a nervous system such as it is and pain keeps you from doing things that are harmful to you) but I feel a little better about it. And then, of course I enjoy them with lots of butter!

I know! when it comes to abortions, they couldn’t care less. They look at this world in ways I fail to understand and don’t care to. All I want to do is defeat them!

I care. And it sickens me that so many people think it’s ok.

If you still feel guilty after numbing the crab, kill it(right before you put it in the pot) with an ice pick, right at the point of the abdomen.

We head for the Oregon Coast most years and get enough crab for a good feast with a crab net.

That’s why I always steam them. The super heated moist vapor is soothing and before they know it, zap! they’re cooked.

This is another sad example of mankind’s inhumanity to crustaceans.

How is killing them with a knife any better/different than boiling them?

Your problem is the word humane. Regarding food, they term is irrelevant. It might be relevant when considering actions between humans but even that is pretty much garbage when dealing with enemies.

If you don’t kill, you die

I don’t know that it is. I just feel better about it (if I had a choice, I’d rather be stuck with something sharp that dispatched me quickly than boiled alive, I think). But, not being a lobster, and not speaking lobsteranian, I’m not sure if they care.

When we catch them, we put them on ice at the pier. I leave them in the ice chest until back home, they go into the boiling water.
