A favored method of preparing fresh crabs is to simply boil them alive. A longstanding related question: Do they feel pain? Yes, researchers now say. Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate). The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans. The study involved using wires to deliver shocks to the bellies of hermit crabs, which, being hermits, often take up residence in left-behind mollusc shells. The crabs that were shocked scampered out of their shells, "indicating that the experience is unpleasant for them," the scientists concluded; unshocked crabs stayed put. Another test was run to see what would happen if a mild shock was delivered, one just below the threshold that would cause the crabs to leave home. These mildly shocked crabs, along with crabs that had not been shocked, were then offered a new home. The typical reaction: They'd go inspect the new shell. Significantly, those that had been shocked were more likely to pack up and move to the new residence compared to those that hadn't been shocked. "There has been a long debate about whether crustaceans including crabs, prawns and lobsters feel pain," said study researcher Bob Elwood of Queen's University Belfast in the UK.

Hermit crabs can be pets too..
Please pardon me while I tune up the world's tiniest violin, as I consider the suffering of all crustaceans.
....
There. That's better.
Now let me move along to consider which is tastier: crab cakes, or crab with Chinese black bean sauce.
Old Bay or J.O.?
I do love me some lobster and crab, but I also have to say I feel bad about that.
Yeah, I know, they gotta die for me to eat ‘em. But I do wish there was a more humane way.
You have to admit, being boild alive has to be one of the worst ways imaginable.
They actually went through the trouble of shocking poor little hermit crabs to determine that the crabs don’t like it. Duh.
My grandkids got some Hermit Crabs and put them in a large aquarium with multiple size plastic shells. Fascinating!
Then, after they got tired of taking care of them, they gave them to the kindergarteners, who remain fascinated. :D
Wondering the age group of these alleged “Scientists”. Wondering if these are the results of too much “Sesame Street”, “Disney”, and other cutesy animal puppet/cartoon characters crammed into the kids brains throughout the sixties, seventies...I guess still going on today?
These “Scientists” definitely require some “Gibbing” on the backs of their heads.
Their alternative, that of being chewed up alive by a sea otter or gastropod, doesn’t sound too pleasant either....
Yeah, I guess they would scream at that too! The ludicrous left...always thinking of ways to take the enjoyment out of life!....They really are miserable people! I’m so glad I had the brains not to be a libtard!
I forgot to tell you, my husband was a classical keyboard musician for church almost all his life. That was one of the jokes he told me back when we were dating. The other was, “Bach’s Organ Works....and his isn’t the only one.”
He was religious, but not celibate. Heh-heh.
Until animals hold jobs and pay taxes, their only purpose is to be eaten, preferrably with sides of butter and A1 sauce.
Well, thats one way to solve the homeless problem.
If you've never had them barbecued, you haven't lived.
Kiddygarten teacher takes care of them now. :D They DO grow fast, though.
