Freedom is out of fashion at Ground Zero.
Once hailed as a beacon of rebirth in the aftermath of Sept. 11, the Freedom Tower has been stripped of its patriotic name -- which has been swapped out for the more marketable "One World Trade Center," Port Authority officials conceded yesterday.
More than seven years after the terror attacks and amid an effort to market the tower to international tenants, sentiment gave way to practicality.
"As we market the building we will ensure that the building is presented in the best possible way," said PA Chairman Anthony Coscia.
"One World Trade Center is its address. It's the address that we're using. It's the one that's easiest for people to identify with, and, frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."
Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot aboard American Airlines Flight 77 that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, said the renaming of the tower is one more example that the nation is forgetting 9/11.
"If we can't say the word freedom out loud, God help us," she said.
"I understand the decision from a marketing point of view. But it saddens me that it's no longer economically viable to declare who we are."

Try not to insert quotes where they don’t belong. It’s the address. It’s it’s function.
My only real complaint is that there aren’t two, and I don’t like the big empty artistic scaffolding pretending to make it taller than it really is.
Ping!
Now we know why Hillary was in China two weeks ago. Funny when you connect the dots, how everything starts to smell really funky.
Ah, yes. Capitalism at work. Sometimes Freepers are all for capitalism: sometimes we're not. Go figure.
Depends on how you go about seeing that we have achieved “Freedom from want”.
For example, we have coal and oil reserves that Democrats have prohibited us from touching. We can be self-reliant (not reliant on global trade that can cripple our economy, especially in wartime) but we have tied our hands.
Also to hear OBAMA tell it, we have it too good. We eat too much. We have air conditioning. We have indoor toilets. We have our own cars. The rest of the world does not have our same standard of living. Again, OBAMA wants to restrict our freedom.
It does not HAVE to be about getting turkey and dressing FROM the state so we can eat on Thanksgiving or Sunday.
And Freedom from Fear...
And our government is charged with the responsibility to defend our nation from enemies both foreign and domestic. Terrorists and traitors like Bill Ayers and Jane Fonda should have been prosecuted for their crimes. Our border should be defended against military incursions from Mexico. Our border should be defended against millions of illegal immigrants. Our nation should not be shutting down our weapons development and reducing our arsenal to “please” China and Russia. Our nation should not be reducing the standing military to establish a “new civilian domestic security” force.
This is an outrage. PC gone wild!
They are going to have a hard time renting out “Three World Trade Center” (Third World?)
Or will there only be one building in the complex now?
I long for the days when Americans acted like Americans, instead of political correct sexually confused wimps.
You noticed that too huh.
I’m aware.
I work in the Financial District and have for most of the last 25 years.
“One World” versus “Freedom”.
Highly symbolic.
Right. The air-head chick on Fox & Friends this morning (yes, I know her name) was complaining that the Chinese probably made them take it off as they’re the first major tenants, and they aren’t free and don’t like freedom. People don’t get that those who like to TALK about freedom the most are the ones with the least of it. WTC is fine. I thought “Freedom Tower” was at best a little bit gay, and at worst a supression of what happened there that day.
That’s the same connotation I took from the name, One World, not an address.
Ditto dat.
I agree.
Can’t believe no one else got this.
Quite frankly, I don’t like how they did things here.
I think they should rebuild the towers, using updated structural designs. People might get the idea that it’s back to business as usual for us.
Using the second terrorist attack on US soil as the reason to build the world’s tallest building is to me, a very poor excuse.
Sorry, but this is just one more example of how political correctness runs everything about this country now. You will NEVER convince me that the word "freedom" would really cause anyone not to rent a floor or an office or whatever in a building. If the word "freedom" is offensive to someone, they're the kind of tenant you don't want.
This is how PC works: It generates issues where no tangible examples even exist. Or it creates a situation that affects millions because of the opinion of some lone crackpot. PC is an insidious evil.
