These seem to be happening more often now.

God bless the families. Clearly they were flying to Bozeman to either ski at Bridger Bowl or Big Sky. Sad. I have family buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in which they crashed. Very sad and such a great loss for the families.

Still haven’t found anything on make and model (CNN FOX) ... FAA regs require seatbelts for every passenger unless they buckled two to a belt which is not allowed. Overloaded - maybe. If the plane can carry (as an example only) 4500lbs and if you add up all the weight of the passengers (say the average kid weighed in at 120 with ski stuff) and it’s within the envelope (counting of course fuel and pilot) then ... but again ... if they were putting two to a belt .....

My company operates 5 Pilatus PC-12s. They are excellent aircraft, powered by the most reliable engine in operation - the Pratt & Whitney PT6. The plane is not capable of holding 17 pax. There are some commuter configs operating in Canada but still don’t hold that many people. FWIW, I don’t believe there has ever been a single engine turbine powered airplane fatality due to engine failure.

Word from my mom who lives in Butte. What fox has been putting out is relatively accurate. Local paper website is

http://www.mtstandard.com/

The weather is clear. Butte is in a high mountain valley (1 mile above sea level) and can be tricky if there was in-flight trouble.

Those are really reliable engines, I have a fair amount of time with the PT-6 in a couple different configurations, around 3500 hours , king air 90 and mainly 200.

I would think, off the top of my head over loaded and in a trim configuration the pilot wasn't prepared for..... if out of cg you can frankly run out of elevator and it can happen quickly as you configure to land.

I'll just wait and see what the NTSB report is.........God rest their souls.
