WASHINGTON (AFP) The US is expected this week to announce plans to dispatch more federal agents to its border with Mexico in a bid to combat drug cartel operations there, US officials said.
Washington appears poised to bolster its customs and border protection forces along the 3000-plus kilometer (2000 mile) frontier, in what would be President Barack Obama's first major domestic security initiative.
The announcement is expected to come "in the next few days" a Department of Homeland Security official told AFP ahead of the announcement.
The impending plan comes as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton prepares to visit to Mexico on Wednesday.
Her trip is to be followed next week by a visit from US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder.
Those high-profile visits will set the stage for a summit in Mexico between Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon on April 16 and 17.
Mounting drug violence has claimed thousands of lives in northern Mexico and has emerged as a fully-fledged national security threat for the United States.

Something fishy here. I wonder what the REAL story is.
US to announce Mexican border deployment
It’s not what you think, they are sending welcome wagon snack trucks and maps to the nearest hospital for pregnant illegals.
Probably sending forces down to the border area to prevent armed citizens from protecting themselves.
Putting troops on the border would be another disaster.
Roach coaches and MASH units?
In the bizarro world we live in,, wouldn’t surprise me.
Meanwhile the Stormtroopers are amassing to go door to door, city by city canvassing for patriotic dissenters.
And der leader watches all while munching on a little rat snack.
No its not an episode from V, its real America, right now, and its in our face.
Will they have guns? Will they be allowed to shoot?
Or is this another futile exercise in public relations?

With Obama’s election and Hillary’s appointment to state, among other things, I’d say the carpetbaggers have ceased to try to hide their agenda.
I don’t think this is the United States of America any more.
Didn’t Bush say he was going to add 8-10 thousand border agents?
What happened to those?
What happened to the fence?
These were just shellgame promises, sort of like the 6,000 national guard — who ended up pushing paper and washing vehicles. They weren’t even allowed to carry weapons.
With the influx of new hires many Border Patrol Agents are being deployed to the southern border.
This “news” post reflects nothing more than The One, The Dear Leader trying to take the credit for something that was started under Bush's watch.
The fence is under construction but running into enviro-weenies, the Indian tribes that span both sides of the border, and of course, their democrat enablers in congress. Nonetheless, construction continues. Some of the fences are to stop vehicles, some of the fences are designed to stop foot traffic, but in all cases the fences are not designed to stop totally those committed to entering (can't be done. . .think Berlin Wall).
The “virtual fence” (monitoring and detection system, not a fence of any sort), it continues to be fielded and the Agents are reaping the benefits where it is active. The Agents get advance warning of where the illegals and drug smugglers are coming from and are able to re-position to intercept. Quite effective in the vast desert areas of the southwest. The Mobile Surveillance System (MSS) trucks are up and running and quite good at the tactical intercept game.
All told, much HAS been done on the border, but truth be told, CBP is ineffective and awful when it comes to doing the PR game, in other words, they are incompetent and simply do not do press releases, therefore the successes just don't get reported. And it doesn't help that the “old patrol” resents the technology because they view it a threat to their jobs, and with that, the union views the technology the same way.
My son is a Border Patrol Agent along the southwest border, trained in the systems and quite positive about the effective use of those systems. He alone within the last several weeks has been part of taking down nearly 100 illegals and over 800lbs of dope. That is effective, and in almost all cases the illegals/drug smugglers were detected and tracked via the new systems.

Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Bush changed his mind, frequently. When he campaigned, in 2000, he said that he wanted to be stricter, against illegal aliens. About three months after he became president, he said that he wanted to give amnesty to some illegals.
Thanks for posting that. Nice to get a first hand view.
I hear this side will check cars now for illegal guns? Can anyone verify?
