Poland says hopes U.S. will not let it down on shield

Sun Mar 22, 2009 7:43pm IST

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Poland said on Sunday it hoped the new U.S. administration would not abandon plans to station a missile defence system on its territory.

President Barack Obama's administration is reviewing U.S. security policy, including the missile shield plan. This has prompted speculation he might shelve a project that has angered Moscow, with which Washington wants to mend ties.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland had taken "something of a political risk" in signing an agreement with the Bush adminstration to host the system.

"When we started discussing this with the United States, the U.S. assured us they would persuade the Russians that it was purely defensive and it would be a non-controversial decision," he told the annual Brussels Forum conference.

"We signed with the old administration; we patiently wait for the new administration, and we hope we don't regret our trust in the United States," he said, adding that Russia had continued to threaten to deploy missiles near Poland if the shield were deployed.

At the same event, U.S. Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher, who is expected to be named the new U.S. under secretary for arms control and international security, said the missile system would not be deployed until it had been proven to work.

She said the current missile threat to deployed troops and southern Europe was from short and medium-range missiles, against which there was already a defence capability.

She said NATO needed to develop a short- to medium-range system, soemthing that could involve cooperation with Russia.

"We could certainly bolt on the long-range system once it has been tested and create a suite of systems that have complete coverage for everybody," she said.

It’s a sad commentary when our allies can’t trust us.
Doesn’t bode well for the future.

I’m so sorry Poland. I wish we had a better President who knew how not to flip off anyone who didn’t personally profit himself and unfortunately you are not one who can.

Hoped?

They're just trying to suck up in hopes that it might strike a change in Obama's attitude via political speak.

Sorry guys. You’re screwed, unfortunately and you have 53% of the American public to thank for it.

What trustworthy allies we are...

Lizol,

Thanks for always posting interesting English articles about Poland.

I just wish I still knew how to read some Polish. If you don’t use it, you lose it. Well, I lost it YEARS ago!

Good ol’ Barry is in the process of dumping our friends and allies and is trying to suck up to our enemies.

Too bad history has proved this tactic to never work and the bully is going to strike out.

We are in trouble in regards to National Security and even after we get hit Barry will not do anything.

He is an empty headed wuss and really thinks that once he surrenders us to Communism he will be placed in total charge. Too bad that he and his ilk will be the first ones eliminated by our conquerors.

Unfortunately Husseins politics have far more in common with those of Russia. Sorry Poland. If only you were still a communist pawn, our acting president might like you!

Dear Poland... Sorry, but I think you are screwed on that one - your leadership used up a lot of political capital to get the local go-ahead, and now it looks like Obama will walk away from you.

You see, Obama is a just dumb enough (actually he is more than dumb enough by a fair margin) to think he can talk Iran out of their missile and nuclear programs. Ok, take a moment to stop laughing, get a drink of water... Yes, our naive and completely inexperienced, unqualified, and possibly ineligible president actually thinks he can engage regimes such as North Korea and Iran in meaningful and productive dialog. Ok, stop laughing again, yes, we picked ourselves a winner.

At least if we survive to 2010 and 2012, obama will do for the GOP and conservatism what he has already done for firearms and ammunition sales. ;-)

During the current political climate in the US, I wouldn't be surprised if there is not a single US ally that can say that they can count on the US to back them up with 100% certainty.

If the citizens of our country can't trust their government, how can we expect our allies to do so?
