Police say suspect behind two separate shootings involving officers

OAKLAND, Calif. - Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.

Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.

The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies.

Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

A man who did not want his name to appear in print and who works at a barber shop on the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and 73rd Avenue, said he heard gunshots from outside and went down the block, where he saw two officers lying on the ground near each other.

“I went over to one officer and saw he was bleeding from his helmet pretty bad,” he said. “The other officer was laying motionless.”

He said the officer lying near a car had two gunshot bullets near in his face. One bullet was lodged in his jaw and the other in his neck.

BunnySlippers does not have to be an armor piercing round. Kevlar helmets will stop shrapnel and dissipated energy bullets but not high powered rifle rounds at relatively close range.

Okay, thanks for the source. I think I’ll put that particular report on the “don’t trust, but verify” list. Not a lot of guys working in a barber shop who’d be able to determine where a bullet was lodged. Probably some element of truth there, though. There’s always a lot of early reporting that’s pretty shaky in these things.

And I am as angry at this as you are. It did not have to happen.

And the sooner the Southern border is secured the better. The drug traffic supports not only a crime network , but now warfare in the streets, which is what this was.

I dono't need details to know we now have armed, violent tribes in California ready to use fire power against those who keep the peace. And banning guns won't do a thing to stop it.Which is what the next bit of foolishness will be about. Dog biting stick again instead of going after the root cause. That is no longer good enough, even in California.

Looked like it to me as well. Did you note the type of Graffiti?

For the most part the images weren't that good. Strangely, in the Google street views, there were very few people on the sidewalks, even though the curbside parking was pretty much full in front of the various stores and shops.

So no, I didn't note the Graffiti.There is some on the building to the right of the apartment building where the killer holed up, and where the second two officers were shot. Means nothing to me though.

Try going to Google Maps, and put in the address:

Rotate the image until you can see the building to the right of the apartment, the little "N" will be just left of the top of it's circle. Then hit the "+" to zoom in on the graffiti.
