CALIFORNIA. Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher (D) was tapped this week to serve in the Obama Administration as US Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security -- the Administration's top arms control negotiator. The centrist Tauscher -- who represents the CD-10 district which includes the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory nuclear weapons/WMD research and development facility --- has been recognized as an expert on nuclear weapons issues during her seven-terms in Congress. "Keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists, making sure other countries do not obtain them and, one day, I hope, ridding the world of these terrible weapons, has become my passion and, I hope, my life's work," said Tauscher. The swing district has a Dem lean -- and the Dem bench of hopefuls is more significant. If Tauscher is quickly confirmed by the Senate, a special election will likely take place in late Spring 2009.
Sounds like an appeaser. Does anyone know much about this woman who may be talking with our fiercest enemies?
I believe this is the arm of the UN that deals with gun control, or at least attempts international gun bans against private citizens owning firearms.
It was Reagan's passion, too, only he didn't just talk about it. W was pretty good at it, too. Yet we still have the cliche about Reagan being a trigger-happy loon.

If Hussein agreed to some type of International treaty banning firearms, or “assault weapons” specifically; if the treaty were ratified by simple majority of the Senate, would that not make the treaty the law in our country regardless of the Constitutionality of such a measure?
She is not to be asswociated with the UN, but will be a US diplomat.
McCain got just a third of the vote in this bay area suburban seat, Bush 40% both of his times. The Austrian carried it with 56%. It was created in 1992 and went Republican. It’s been rat held since 1996. 20-30 years ago this would probably have been a GOP seat.

She’s called a moderate for the bay area, which means she’s smidge to to the right of Lenin.
Yep, she is only moderate by their standards. She’s not as moonbatty as some, but still far out(11 lifetime ACU rating).
No, the Constitution trumps treaties.
The Supreme Court would have to rule that the Second Amendment doesn’t mean what it says to make a treaty banning guns enforceable.
They plan on passing the assault weapons ban again though, obviously the courts never overturned that.
She is an appeaser.
US ARms negotiators used have as their goal, negotiating so that the enemy gave up THEIR nukes, while the US still had plenty left.
She has the wrong attitude from the get go.
Interesting constituancy:
Though word about the arrest is being closely guarded both in Washington and California, there remains significant concern about other security problems in the eastern Bay area where Lawrence Livermore is located - not to mention generally within the family of U.S. nuclear laboratories. One reason for increased concern involving Livermore is the fact that it is located amid one of the largest Arab populations in the world outside of the Middle East. U.S. officials are taking care to keep it from becoming the target of a terrorist act.

She will have to do Obama’s bidding even if she disagreed in the slightest degree and Obama can get an extreme liberal to run for her supposed centrist seat.
In the last few days, I’ve seen some names lining up to run. One report said that the RNC is looking to central casting for a celebrity name (Brent Jones).
From WSJ, John Fund: “Former GOP Assemblywoman Lynne Leach told me she isn’t interested in running but said that Tom Del Beccaro, who is vice chair of the state’s Republican Party, would be a strong candidate. Catherine Moy, a city council member in Fairfield, could also expect strong support in the Solano County portion of the district. But perhaps the most intriguing potential candidate would be Warren Rupf, who has been elected Contra Costa sheriff four times. A 40-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, he has a good-government image and would be a formidable contender. The election is likely to be held in August or September, depending on when Ms. Tauscher is confirmed by the Senate as the State Department’s new top arms control negotiator. The outcome may hinge on whether Democrats have a divisive primary and if Republicans can coalesce behind a single candidate.”
SF Chron: “Republicans are already mentioning a few possible names: Abram Wilson, the African American and moderate Republican mayor of San Ramon, who narrowly lost race for state Assembly last fall; Jones, the former 49er who lives in Danville, and who GOP aides have tried to coax to run against Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton; and Tom Del Beccaro, the state Republican Party vice chairman, who lives in Lafayette.”
Missile Offense

The Kremlin has been dusting off old Bolshevik intimidation techniques since the U.S. signed a missile defense partnership with Poland last month. The Russian foreign ministry promised that its response “would go beyond diplomacy,” and a Russian general mused that this meant its nuclear missiles would have to target Poland. Who would have thought such talk would find an accommodating ear in the U.S. Congress?
That will be the question when Illinois Republican Representative Mark Kirk offers an amendment in the coming days to the Defense Appropriations bill to restore funding for missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The money was struck in May by Democrats who justified the cuts by claiming that the Iranian threat was not developing quickly and a deal with Poland hadn’t been signed. Now Iran has tried to orbit its first satellite and a deal with Poland is in place, so we’ll soon see if House Democrats and Barack Obama change with the new reality.
Even as Polish leaders were risking Russia’s wrath by signing the U.S. deal, California Democrat Ellen Tauscher declared that the missile defense partnership was proceeding way too fast. Ms. Tauscher wrote on the left-wing Huffington Post last month that the U.S.-Polish pact would “build an ideologically-based system that is untested and certainly not ready, against a threat that has not yet emerged.”
Ms. Tauscher chairs the House Strategic Forces Subcommittee and so can be a real obstacle to the Polish deal...

Actually, a good part of that district was carved off in ‘92 to elect Bill Baker to get as many Republicans as possible out of Ron “Red” Dellums’s then-district. He always had a substantial minority of people who voted against him (and they weren’t all Republicans, either. This guy offended a lot of non-Stalinist Democrats). A friend of my father’s lived in that chunk of the district (Walnut Creek/Lafayette) prior to the ‘90 redistricting, and when we visited him, he gave us an earful about how horrible that Commie was.
