The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.
President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.
Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.
He bowled a 129, the president said.
"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.
It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.
When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.
"The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics," White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. "He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world."
Facing tough questions about the performance of his Treasury Secretary, $165 million in bonuses for AIG officials and anticipating a fight over his $3.55 trillion budget, the president has not had a particularly good week, and it's unlikely this will help matters.

Awwwwwww.....*sniff*
((((hugs)))) to my friend!
Let him sit with Michael Steele on that Oprah couch and they can take turns “clarifying.”
But, if he had said that anywhere else than on Leno, most would not have seen or heard it. Obama supporters don't watch the real news, they watch the fake stuff on CNN,CBS, MSNBC.
His admirers have all gathered to watch their hero on Leno, however, and what a surprise they will get. How many of them are parents with disabled children who will hear Obama make fun of them? How many others will see him for what he truly is. Being on Leno, and stupidly saying what type of comment he usually makes (but is hidden by the press) is the best thing that could happen to put another tear in the curtain he has been hiding behind.
So quickly he rose...and just as quickly he will fall. Just like every flash in the pan. We have to keep letting him be himself. He is his own worst enemy.
((((LUV)))) - Hugs back a’tcha!
Of course I did not write that - but it is SO touching - and meaningful, I had to post it here. “O” would never understand the intent - in a million years!
I don't think the TOTUS will let him make the same mistake again
I think there are many people who are so smart they’re stupid. I believe Obama may be one of them.
The Kennedys are strong supporters of the Special Olympics, I’m sure they’ll be OUTRAGED about this comment.
Not. Holding. My. Breath.
The man is too stupid to live. Ooooooo....I guess “they” will
think that’s a threat! I’m soooo scared! ;D
West Coast FReepers... let us know if it makes it to your broadcast timezone.
I would watch and report but I’m at work until long after it airs.
The narcissistic fool is up next. We’ll see.
His teleprompter would have known better.....
I would agree that the Church based are often Republican, but that kind of depends on the person as well as the Church.
My point, of course, is that this WILL offend some people who had, before now, either voted for Obama, or at least, if not for Obama in November, wanted to “give him a chance”.
I am very upset at his comment, but he has ticked off a new group every day.
The Veterans and their families.
The Disabled, and their families.
He is an incompetent communist. He is too arrogant to follow what Saul Alinsky teaches.
Obama is energizing the opposition and alienating his base.
Thought this sign might interest a few of my favorite FReepers!
Obama bowled a mere 37 on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania.
LOL!! This man is WAY to uncomfortable in his own skin to be President. He can't even figure out how to make fun of himself.
Two months ago I was worried about having Zero as President for 8 years. Now I'm beginning to wonder if he'll resign after 6 months. What a train wreck.
That's higher than his IQ!
Cheers!
What will happen? There'll be no mention of bowling on the broadcast; the electrons recording the exchange will automagically disappear, as will the reports by Tapper and others; Rush and Imus and Beck tomorrow will be accused of fabricating the story; and the O-bots will believe it.
As for the targets of his scorn, decent folk protect the weakest among us and love unconditionally the children who, through no fault of their own, have unusual limitations. Indecent people mock them, use them, and kill them. There will be a reckoning.
well zer0 that might be a step in the right direction, admitting that you are definitely mentally challenged.
Exactly. If 3 guys are hanging around discussing each others bowling skills, that’s one thing, but you do not go in front of an audience, especially a national TV audience and talk like this, an audience with lots of real life parents of special needs kids and maybe a few of the kids too.
A gentleman he isn’t.
Tennie, this has already been covered by MSNBC (Olbermann broke the story), Anderson Cooper and Ed Henry on CNN, and Jake Tapper on ABC. It isn’t going to disappear, even if the New York Times did ignore it and leave it out of their story.
AP story has it and it’s in the Washington Post. Politico has it, too.
If NBC cuts it, then there is even more to the story, as NBC will get dragged into it.
This is from the same guy who said he was a “mutt.”
Utterly classless.
