Commission finds former Attorney General Marc Dann violated election law (OHIO)

COLUMBUS: The Ohio Elections Commission has found former Attorney General Marc Dann guilty of violating state election law for using campaign funds to pay for a personal cell phone and a security system for his home.

In a split decision, the 7-member panel also found the Dann for Ohio committee guilty in both instances. Dann's deputy campaign treasurer Mary Beth Snyder was found in violation only for the security system purchase.

The panel issued public reprimands against Dann for the cell phone violation and gave him a maximum fine of $1,000 for the security system violation.

It declined to send either violation to the county prosecutor.

A second complaint against Dann is still pending.

The Democrat from Youngstown resigned in May amid a sexual harassment scandal in his office.

The panel issued public reprimands against Dann for the cell phone use.

The Return of Marc Dann
By Laura Bischoff | Thursday, March 19, 2009, 10:23 AM

Former attorney general Marc Dann returned to the media spotlight on Thursday, March 19, and could barely keep quiet.

He arrived early for a 10 a.m. Ohio Elections Commission hearing with his lawyer, Donald McTigue, and genially chatted up the reporters who covered him during his time as a state senator and attorney general.

During the lengthy hearing, Dann passed notes and whispered to McTigue so often that opposing counsel dryly said, “The secretary of state would be happy to have Mr. Dann sworn in if he’d like to testify.”

Thursday’s hearing marked perhaps the first public appearance by Dann in the state capital since his resignation May 14, 2008.

With a dozen reporters, four TV cameras and two news photographers paying close attention, McTigue defended decisions made by the Dann For Ohio campaign committee to spend $40,000 on an extensive home security system at Dann’s Liberty Twp. home.

The security system was seen as less costly than continuing to pay police officers to provide 24-hour executive protection.

The security measures started in July 2, 2007 after Dann’s then Deputy First Assistant Brian Laliberte received vague, threatening phone call at work on June 29, 2007.

Between July and November, state taxpayers paid more than $145,000 for police protection for Dann and his family. The Dann administration decided to install the home security system to replace the more costly police protection.

McTigue argued that it was an ordinary, verifiable campaign expense related to Dann’s duties as an office holder so it shouldn’t be considered a violation of campaign finance laws. The threats were related to Dann’s position, he said.

Assistant Attorney General Melinda Osgood, who represents Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, countered that a $40,000 security system is a permanent fixture that benefits the Dann family - something that goes way beyond an ordinary expense.

Your Lucky, the Main Stream Media usually don't mention the party of a Democrat fearing they will loose city folks allegiance.

The MSM doesn't care for Republican viewers as they slander us and ours repeatedly. Obviously they feel their advertisers don't need the widest audience nor the revenue dollars of those they say are "Fat Cats".

Well, we Buckeyes knew. All the crooks here are Dems. I’d say for every unethical, crooked Republican, there’s about 25 Dems.

Well we can’t argue that. It’s nice out there but you guys get all the SNOW!!! I’m over in the “secondary snow belt” per Dick Goddard. Yeah, it’d be wee bit of a way for you to come out to Medina.

There’s a new group that I found out because it was linked here on FR. Freeper, Nomad, informed me about it and my hubby and I went to a meeting and it is a great group.

MCFAN - Stands for Medina County Friends and Neighbors. They meet 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. at the Golden Corral restaurant in Medina right by the Home Depot. It’s an $8.00 buffet breakfast if people want to come and eat while they sit at the meeting.

They have a website for anyone interested - Mcfan.org.

We Bucks gotta stick together!

Oh, that sounds really nice, and it sounds like you really enjoyed yourselves at the meeting. I will check out the website.

I’m wondering if there’s something in the Lake County area. I’ll do some research.

Well, this is what I’m thinking GL, we’ve got a nice group out in Medina that’s growing by leaps and bounds. Have been to two meetings and we’ve had visitors from Lorain, Summit, Cuyahoga and other counties. There are always some government officials in attendance as well. The couple running it are just super folks and the whole point is to network, network, network.

We’ll be ready for the next election. They got us this time but not next time. Over my dead body. I am not going to lay down and die and watch these lefties ruin my country that my great, great, etc. granddaddy fought for back in the Revolutionary War.
