The five countries that ring the Arctic on Thursday declared climate change the single greatest threat to polar bears, calling for urgent action to curb global warming.
Months ahead of a crucial global climate conference, the five countries -- Canada, Denmark (with Greenland), Norway, Russia and the United States -- expressed their "deep concern" at the end of a three-day meeting in the northern Norwegian town of Tromsoe.
"The parties agreed that long-term conservation of polar bears depends upon successful mitigation of climate change," they wrote in a joint statement following discussion on threats to the white bear that have emerged since they first signed a conservation agreement in 1973.
That agreement was aimed mainly at banning the hunting of polar bears, which at the time was considered the only real threat to the animal.
Nearly four decades later, however, the Arctic partners said they "agreed that impacts of climate change and the continued and increasing loss and fragmentation of sea ice... constitutes the most important threat to polar bear conservation."
They also "recognised the urgent need for an effective global response that will address the challenges of climate change."
While the statement was not legally binding, it was welcomed by environmentalists and scientists who said they hoped it would send a clear message to the international community ahead of talks to be held in Copenhagen

How many people can a polar bear carcass feed?
Oh no it’s not. My 30-06 to the chest of the polar bear will drop him faster than global warming.
Of course, Al Gore may bore the bear to death even sooner yet.
Notice the shift to calling it “climate change” instead of global warming. They’re toning down the rhetoric now that people are starting to realize that global warming is a hoax.
And Obama is the greatest threat to America!
‘Of course, Al Gore may bore the bear to death even sooner yet.’
Shouldn’t that be ‘Al Gore may boar the bear to death...’
Good! They hunt humans, hopefully they will become extinct.
Non, no, you don’t understand. According to these true believers it’s how many polar bears can people carcasses feed. Got it?
IF the climate of the entire Earth were truly changing, the action taken on a gobal scale should NOT be for the purpose of “saving the Polar Bear”.
The topic itself is ludicrous.

Then those 5 countries are lying. The climate has been cooling for the past Ten years, Ice is NOT melting in the Arctic, and Polar bears are NOT in any danger whatsoever, in fact their numbers have increased by 25,000 over the past 20 years, which is putting pressure on their food supply, which is reflected in the bears by them being a little leaner than they normally are, but otherwize very healthy.
CO2 is NOT a "greenhouse gas", and Human caused CO2 is NOT in anyway a environmental concern. The worlds natural carbon sink, the ocean, is easily capable of absorbing Human caused co2 every 4 years.
Perhaps these 5 countries need to hire REAL scientists, instead of relying on reports by politically motivated IPCC members, like David Zuzuki and Al Gore, who aren't even qualified scientists in the field of climatology.
Yep, since it is becoming more and more obvious that the planet stopped warming in 1998, they have started calling it “climate change”. Now they will start claiming that the polar bears will starve because there is TOO MUCH ice.
The rapid dropping of the phrase GLOBAL WARMING into the more up-to-date phrase CLIMATE CHANGE is a defensive measure to ensure continuing and future JOB SECURITY for those making their fortune off the “problem”.
This has now become a self-sustaining INDUSTRY, whose main and ONLY product is “spreading the alarms” and proposing new regulations that will require NEW armies of bureaucrats for enforcement.
The world had warmed and the world has cooled, since the beginning, and the cycles will continue until the end. Nothing new here, move along.
What is NEW is the opportunity for the conversion of NORMALCY to be made into a MONEY MAKING industry.
There always has been and always will be “climate change.” I guess the modern “climate change” kooks don’t believe their science books.
Sounds like they could create some mean little bears.
Seems like a good time to post these paragraphs from a National Park Service magazine about Clacier National Park in Montana. I picked this up at the gift shop in the 80’s, prior to all this nonsense:
“The present glaciers in the park are not remnants of the great ice age, but are the result of cyclic changes in the climate over the last ten thousand years. About four thousand years ago the climate became very warm, similar to that which would be found in southern California today. At that time the temperatures were much too warm to support any ice masses. Later, there were cycles of warm and cold periods. With the coming of a cold period, glaciers formed filling cirques with ice and advanced down the valleys.
The last period of cold with abundant moisture leading to increased glacial activity is estimated to have reached its peak in the 1850s, at which time the present glaciers in the park probably reached their maximum size. Since that time, most of the glaciers in the park have been declining in volume. When discovered in 1896, Sperry Glacier covered approximately 1000 acres. It now blankets less than 300 acres. When, in 1888, George Bird Grinnell discovered the glacier that bears his name, it covered approximately 900 acres. Today it covers just over 300 acres. Perhaps it is destined for all of the glacial activity in the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park to terminate. Yet there are those who would project that we are simply in another inter-glacial period that if there have been four great ice ages why could there not be a fifth?”
But that would be manpigbear not manbearpig ... :-)
This article does not say who actually attended with regard to their authority. It implies that they represented the governments, but official conferences usually have names and officials attending.
