Gingrich Switches Bailout Stance (for those on FR with short memories)
ABC News ^ | September 29, 2008

Posted on 03/18/2009 10:14:32 AM PDT by Captain Kirk

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich reversed course on Monday, issuing a statement saying that if he were still in office he would "reluctantly and sadly" support the $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill.

Gingrich, who led the charge against the bailout last week, explained his change in position by saying that the House Republicans, "reinforced by John McCain," have improved the bill "significantly" so it is "less bad" than the original proposal offered by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

While saying that he sympathizes with any member of Congress who votes "no," Gingrich says in his statement that the crisis of the credit markets is real and could have "horrendous" consequences.

Instead of paying attention to Gingrich's recent statements why not instead praise those Republicans who held firm and voted TWICE against Bush's bailout.

Gingrich is too unreliable to even consider any future piblic office. He should just quietly go away.......

Agreed. The problem is that the $700 bailout bill will do little if anything to abate the credit crisis, and is likely to make the situation a lot worse.

I know there are many on FR who think Newt is still the bee's knees, but this is yet another example of why he's NOT.

He was great in his time -- hat tip to 1994's Newt Gingrich. But it's time for him to take up fly fishing or some other hobby, and leave the heavy lifting to the conservatives who "get it" in 2009.

Whenever I see a politician make this kind of flip-flop, it tells me he’s driven by something other than core beliefs and a set of principles.

Dah-NEWT is a worthless radical ultra left-wing republican socialist.

He’s trying to move to the center and pretend he is still a conservative.

I turn off any show that has him on, sorry Sean.

Just more evidence of what I have thought of him all along - just another opportunistic, mealy-mouthed politician. He was NEVER anything else.

Look at the date. This was back in September. A lot of people made this mistake back then and have now seen the error of their ways.

What I meant is every time Gingrich looks like “our guy” he turns to something else. I am wondering if the Dems have “blackmail” material on him. That is all I was saying.

” I know there are many on FR...”

Or put a bit more cogently: “This egocentric hack had his opportunity to well serve our Republic — and he blew it — BIG TIME.”

Gingrich redefines the nomer: “POS”.
