A sitting President of the United States is "organizing a political organization loyal to him, bound by a pledge, outside the government and existing party apparatus. The historical precedents are ominous."
What is so ominous about an organization? Americans, Alexis de Tocqueville famously observed, "constantly form associations.... If it is proposed to inculcate some truth or to foster some feeling by the encouragement of a great example, they form a society."
Certainly, thousands of organizations seek to influence the political debate. There's Newt Gingrich's American Solutions or the left-wing People for the American Way, for instance.
Political parties are another example of an association, of course. Before, during and after political campaigns, the Democrats and Republicans promote their agendas. As legal entities, they have their own constitutions, their rules of business, their chairmen and officers. They have to be accountable to both the government and their members.
But there is a new organization on the political scene -- "Organizing for America," announced by President Barack Obama in late January but officially unfurled last weekend.
Obama describes OFA as a "grass-roots movement" but OFA is a "project" of the Democratic Party of America.
As Politico reported, OFA will take the 10 million person database built up by the Obama campaign "to mobilize support for the president's legislative agenda."

One of the many reasons I laughed at the leftists who called conservatives “NAZIs”. Laughed and reminded them that projectionism is a mental disorder they should seek help for.
The bad part is that the laughter was not from a humor perspective, but from the historical knowledge that what the left really is will destroy America and freedom. We are seeing this national socialist tyranny now, daily. A notice in the comments section states that this Brownshirt group will have their first canvasing action on the 21st of March. I am sure that all who oppose Obama's minions will be noted and tracked. I am soo ready for this deployment to be done and get home to my family to help defend them.
My own theory is that far too many otherwise devoted liberals have skin in the capitalist game, in the form of their own jobs, investments, pension funds, etc., to follow their Pied Piper off the cliff. Even State/Municipal employees and public schoolteachers are starting to find out they’re not recession-proof either. I believe that when it sinks in that the Messiah really does mean to beggar all of us in his glorious Brave New World, 98% of otherwise true-believing Kool-Aid drinkers will suddenly feel the cold terror that we are already feeling when they contemplate their beloved coffee-shop/faculty lounge/student union vaporous theorizings taking brutal solid form that they won’t be able to pull him off his throne fast enough. Just think, for instance, what will happen when the various sacred cows of the welfare state realize that the money to support them just isn’t going to be there and can no longer be conjured? Smiling promises and reassuring sonorous speeches aside?
How many Democrat pols do you think are going to stand by their man when their limos start getting swarmed Rostenkowski-style (Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act, 1989)? That “Slobbering Love Affair” of Bernie Goldberg’s description is already starting to show a few cracks. Unless The One can promise to preserve THEIR jobs in the New Order, I can’t see the MSM sticking to him to the bitter end. Jimmy Carter was going to be their golden boy once upon a time, but they turned on him for a lot less.
If worst comes to worst, considering this latest gratuitous slap in the face from the Big “O” (i.e., charging wounded veterans for the cost of their treatment) do you think you and your comrades-in-arms will do a Tiannenmen and fire cannister at your fellow citizens when the Maximum Leader orders you to defend him and his regime?
