Actor and longtime political activist Ron Silver died this morning, succumbing to a long battle with cancer, friends of the liberal Democrat-turned-GOP stalwart told The Post.
"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him this morning," said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped create.
"He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years and his family is making arrangements for a private service."
Friends of Silver first told Post columnist Cindy Adams of the native New Yorker's death.
The steely-eyed, blunt-talking Silver, 62, enjoyed a long career on the stage, TV and in movies, and most recently hosted a public affairs talk show on Sirius satellite radio.

Shalom, Ron!
Nevermind - it was Ron Silver who made the planes comment. Glad he came over to our side.

Oh what a shame. Too, too young. RIP, Ron.
I feel the same way as when Bruno Kirby died far too young.
I saw him on TV during the conventions last summer, and I couldn’t believe it was him. I knew he had to be sick, he looked so bad.
Actually, it was Clinton, not Carter.
Oseh Shalom aleinu v’yal Kol Yisrael! It is interesting to note that the Torah Reading for this week has to do with the Silver half-shekel that was given by the sons of Israel to Moses. Each man over 20 was to give this offering as an atonement for his soul and take his place in the Israel defence force. The Silver of this offering was used to make up the fittings that held the Holy Tabernacle together. May it be that Ron now will now take his place in that true Tabernacle, made without hands, in the Heavens. Peace and Love from Heaven on the whole Silver family.
A fitting epitath: We need more men like Ron Silver.
Damn! Just...damn.
Here was a decent man who chose to support his country over Hollywood, suffered for it and now he’s dead at age 62.
I don’t blame God for He does what He does and has every right to do it. I do blame Hollywood, however. Even though it won’t hurt Hollywood in the least, I’ll hold a grudge because those America-betraying scumbags made his professional life miserable in his last years.
I won’t forget, you bastards.
I will say a prayer for him and his family. Too young. Too sad.
He was one who really earned our respect. Not only was he at that inauguration, but he was right up there with the elites and standing behind C. himself. So he was really in with the big wigs.
For him to separate himself from them, and do it so publically, shows character.
If only more would follow his lead.
Bless you, Mr. Silver!
All too sad; he was a wonderful spokesman for ‘Reason’. . .had no idea he was ill. So much to do; too young to go. God speed. . .
Prayers and condolences to his family and friends...
I had no idea he was sick! His final days as a warrior for the GOP should be commended. RIP Ron.
sad ping...
RIP, Mr. Silver. Conservatives and all loyal American patriots will always consider you one of us.
RIP, Ron. A decent guy among the indecent.
I am sorry to hear that. RIP and prayers to the family.
Was there any history of any smoking or somesuch which might have been connected?
Prayers up for the family & loved ones...
R.I.P.
Condolences to the family, friends and fans.
RIP Ron
