Kerry changes his tune (and Specter asking pols for open primary; he's worried)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 3/15/09

U.S. Sen. John Kerry's outrage over a bailout-receiving bank's use of taxpayer money has a hypocritical ring to it.

So suggested Gannett News Service political editor Chuck Raasch Wednesday, as he called out the Massachusetts Democrat and husband of Pittsburgh pickle heiress Teresa Heinz.

---snip---

SEN. SPECTER EYES 'OPEN' 2010 PATH. Arlen Specter's "Panicky in Pennsylvania" tour continues.

The veteran Republican U.S. senator, who is openly concerned about his re-election chances after voting for the $787 billion economic stimulus bill, has been contacting state legislators, according to a Harrisburg source.

Specter supposedly has been asking the state pols about the prospect of Pennsylvania having an open primary next year.

He obviously will attempt almost anything to avoid a direct party confrontation with Pat Toomey. The former U.S. representative nearly defeated Specter in the 2004 GOP primary and has all but formally declared his intention to run again.

Specter already has one announced challenger for the Republican nomination: Peg Luksik of Johnstown, the conservative activist who has run unsuccessfully for governor three times.

Talk in Harrisburg is that Specter will change his party affiliation to Democrat if he can't persuade state lawmakers to approve an open primary.

“Talk in Harrisburg is that Specter will change his party affiliation to Democrat if he can’t persuade state lawmakers to approve an open primary.”

How would that be a change?

"Specter will change his party affiliation to Democrat"

Flush him out, and then flush him down.

I heard that the Pennsylvania Democrats aren’t keen to have Specter. They have other candidates groomed and ready to run for his seat.

I’d like to crush Specter’s pea-sized testicles with the heel of my boot.

Why not go ahead and change parties?

That would give him an edge up on chairmanships, etc.

Same with Collins.

Same with Snowe.

Same with McCain.

It would be great to see a real Pub from PA. I have a hard time believing that Toomey could win. The state is becoming deep blue, look at the election results for 0. Also, it's heavily unionized and the Rats are giving them control of the economy and huge growth if they pass the forced unionization bill.

My stand on the situation is that the Republican Party should initiate the change for him by telling him they don’t want him.

Not holding my breath, but that sort of action by the Republican Party would show they finally mean what is printed on those form letters requesting contributions.

Open Primary? How about, NO!!!!!!!

Specter changing his affiliation to a Democrat? Fine with us; we know he’s one, anyway!

We shouldn’t have open primaries anywhere in this country! Look at the disaster they provided in the last election!

The Republican party needs to fight him on the primary issue. They need to keep those primaries closed.

In fact, the Republicans need to do that in every open primary state - push for closed primaries to stop ACORN from pushing the Cross over voting.

This is what gave us McCain and eventually Barack Hussein Obama.

If it’s a choice between voting for Specter and a Democrat - I’ll vote for the Democrat, just to get Specter out of office.

Just wrote to my state representative and sent him a copy of the article. He’s a good Conservative and will raise hell if necessary to put Specter out.

Nobody wants a turncoat, even the receiving team. Jumpin' Jim Jeffords learned that elementary lesson.

Word on the seat is that the Dems what him to switch because they have no one. But I hearing polling shows that Toomy is up in a General election head to head since many dems will not vote for Spector just because he is someone that they have not been able to kill. Philly turnout out will be down and Centeral Penn will be Presidental level turnout and the Phill Burbs will not be able to save his ass (like in 92) this time.
