From government cheese to government beer.

And the sad part is that they'll still be driving to Quebec to get 12 beer for $12.99.

Leave it to government to come up with the most unworkable and counterproductive solution possible.

Somehow I am reminded of the descriptions of the foul government produced “Victory” gin in Orwell’s 1984.

Make beer. Sell beer. Arrest you for drinking beer.

No, I don’t.

At least it is brewed in a real brewery- Moosehead- not in some newly built government facility. Real government beer would be created by committee and undoubtedly taste like it.

I was born & raised in a Maine/NB border town...most of my dad’s family is from there. Back in the high school days, Moosehead was the prized stuff...a whole lot more potent than any of that cheap, watered-down, American beer. A couple of Moosehead, and you were good to go for the night!!!! As teens, we’d chum up to our Canadian counterparts, and do a little horse-trading, bartering, smuggling etc. to get our hands on the stuff....ahhhh, yes! The good old days...long gone now.

Liquid bread, historians think it's what the Egyptians used to keep the slaves happy and working.

Nothing like a half drunk dependent little socialist looking forward to a cheap brew after work to keep them in line...

Wow, so they have a government run monopoly Liquor store chain in New Brunswick, and laws that specify a minimum price floor. The stated purpose of the law is to reduce demand (and reduce sales).

And they are losing business to private enterprises that are just a few miles away, across a bridge, that don't have the artificial price floor.

And their solution is a private label beer that will always be available at the minimum (sale/promotional) price, which is still well above the price across the bridge.

Amazing.

New Brunswick's policy of socially responsible pricing means that the lowest allowable price for 12 cans is $18.67. That policy is designed to set a floor price for beer in the belief that any lower prices would lead people to buy too much and develop drinking problems.
