Chris Dodd trails in CT polls, but is closer the more voters know his opponent

Sen. Chris Dodd (AP Photo/Susan Walsh) Connecticut voters in 2010 could finally answer a question I've always wanted to know the answer to: Just how corrupt and incompetent does a New England Democrat senator need to be to lose to a Republican? We already know Ted Kennedy couldn't meet the threshold. Perhaps Chris Dodd, the man known for teaming up with Kennedy to form a "waitress sandwich," can.

Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, who oversaw and encouraged the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as Chairman of the Senate Bamking Committee, polls below all Republican comers in his home state for 2010.

A new poll by Quinnipiac University's polling institute shows that he trails potential GOP challenger Rob Simmons, a former Congressman from the New London area, by 43% to 42% in a putative matchup for the 2010 election.

As long as Chris Dodd is "vulnerable", no need to replace him with Democrat-lite.

I don’t believe that’s true. Dodd polls ahead of all GOPers except Simmons.

If the GOP could somehow pull this out, it would be an absolutely huge boost to what could be an otherwise disappointing year.

The GOP has it's worked cut out for it in 2010, especially in the Senate. They need a really good year, just to keep the numbers that exist today. If they have anything other than that, the Dems could pick up several more seats in key battleground states.

A Conservative is needed to take Dodd's place not a Republican.

I’m skeptical. Polls got my hopes up we would unseat fat anti-American slob Murtha— only to be letdown.

What we need is an army of jobless, unemployed ex-cons to vote several times for our candidates. Until we can find hordes of our own— we’ll always be at a disadvantage.

I think the point is that he's vulnerable to a moderate Republican. He's not vulnerable to a fire-breathing conservative Republican. This is Connecticut we're talking about

Have you ever been to Connecticut? A conservative isn't going to win their even if pictures surface of Dodd with a harem of young boys. If Dodd is too damaged, he'll either step aside, or will be defeated in the Dem primary. The Dem would pick up the seat, not the conservative.

Please, please, no more waiting and dreaming for electoral victory by Conservatives.

There are only about 20-30% of Americans left who are patriots.

We don't have a media mass platform, no Hollywood, no Academia, no aggressive political party.

Nothing, we are done.

Unless we turn radical...which will not happen with the Conservative base, political war is too icky and unseemly for them.

This kind of poll is more important, IMO, as a guage of national public unease. Regardless of whether a GOPer could win in Connecticut, it shows doubt in the minds of the so called “moderates”. If Conn. moderates are doubtful...what about a Nevada “moderate” or a North Carolina “moderate”?

The problem? The GOP as a whole needs a cohesive, simple message. The Contract With America did that, but they can’t simply repeat the past, they have to come up with something that is similar, but not a retread.

Oh, nevermind then.

Yes but it's from a webpage dedicated to "drafting" Schiff for Senate. He hasn't announced a run... although he hasn't ruled one out either.

I'm sure Schiff is not perfect, but I think he would be infinitely preferable than the Sam Caliguiri (moderate squish?) / Larry Kudlow (open borders, major baggage in his past / 180o wrong on recession in 2008) and Rob Simmons (far left on social issues) crowd.

Schiff would put up a tough fight against Obama's Marxist policies in the U.S. Senate and his track record on economic issues is absolutely rock solid.

“The media and the Obama administration jumped all over Rush Limbaugh because he expressed a desire that Obama fails. We all better hope he fails. The only chance our economy has to succeed is for Obama to fail. We don’t want the country to fail. Rush Limbaugh doesn’t want our country to fail. It’s because he wants our country to succeed that he wants Obama to fail in what he is trying to accomplish. Obama’s policies are going to make things worse. You can say ‘Obama is going to pour gasoline on the fire. I just hope it puts out the fire,’. Why would I want to hope that? I know that’s impossible. I know if I put gasoline on the fire it will make things worse. Should I hope Obama is successful in pouring a lot of gasoline on the fire? No. I should hope somebody tackles him, somebody stops him. That’s what we need. We need congress to stand up and stop Obama from doing it. But instead they’re just standing behind him handing him buckets of gasoline. ” -- Peter Schiff 3/5/09 - Schiff Report Video Blog

Something is wrong with the mentality of Connecticut voters. It seems like they follow the same ideology as the cult followers of King Obama. When will they learn. Probably never! Guess none of these voters realize that Dodd and Frankee were responsible for the mortgage crash.

1) The polls show Dodd is extremely disliked and polling poor numbers below 50% no matter who runs against him, and 2) Peter Schiff is NOT a "fire-breathing conservative Republican". He's an economist who doesn't openly involve himself in partisan causes. He is, however, absolutely a rock solid free-market libertarian-minded limited government type, and predicted the House bubble disaster and economic crash before anyone else did. The campaign ads we could run against Dodd with him on the ballot would be great.

Please don't misunderstand, I think Schiff would be a great choice. I was pointing out that some other people think that we could get a Texas or Oklahoma style Republican to win in CT. I think that isn't the case. Schiff would have intellectual appeal, which is very important in NE/NY.

Despite voting for Dodd 20 or 30 years in a row, there is a libertarian base in CT that would help the GOP candidate - in fact, I think that there are more people registered as Independents than are registered in any other party in CT.

State Senator Sam Caligiuri is the real deal. He served as acting Mayor of Waterbury during the Giordano scandal and was praised by the papers for his integrity and bring order to the city during the investigation of Giordano.

Simmons is a RINO of the first order. He was my Congressman and voted consistently against President Bush's agenda. I called his Washington office after one of his votes and told them it was the last time I or my extended family, all 50 voters, would ever vote for him again. He lost to Courtney the next election probably because I lied and voted for him and am now being punished with Courtney.

Bottom line is I don't think trying to ape the Democrats platform makes one "more electable", even in New England. As someone else pointed out, Simmons may be to the left of Dodd on abortion. He doesn't need to be that far-left to "win".

I agree CT voters are certainly not the most conservative people in the country, but this election will be a referendum on Dodd's economic policies, and Schiff is the most qualified person to go after him on that. We can get a much stronger Senator on our side without having to run a partisan Jesse Helms type.

Dems get a majority by doing the same thing when they're in areas where they're outnumbered. They get a couple of socialists elected Senator in "right wing" states like North Dakota by running them under the radar and making the election a contest about who cares about the people of North Dakota the most. We can get a rock solid free market small government conservative elected in Conn. if we ran the right kind of campaign. Our side just doesn't know how to play the game.

In New England, a democrat has to be REALLY corrupt before they will kick him out. Dodd knows that the loony liberals will reelect him.
